On August 15th, 2018, the 5th round of performances was launched for the NCPA opera commission FANG Zhimin, with MENG Weidong as composer, FENG Baiming and FENG Bilie as librettists and LIAO Xianghong as stage director.
Under the baton of conductor ZHANG Yi, the China NCPA Chorus and Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra cooperated with HAN Peng, WANG Chong, LIU Songhu, ZHANG Yang, ZHAO Lili, ZHANG Xin, LIU Shan, KOU Jing and other singers to roll out immortal poems for this revolutionary hero with affectionate melodies.
FANG Zhimin focuses on prison life of the proletarian revolutionary FANG Zhimin. By means of flashback, the opera lays out time and space of “the Present” and “the Past”, eulogizing FANG Zhimin’s life story for the revolutionary cause.
Time and Space of “the Present” follows the keynote of FANG Zhimin’s experience of imprisonment and final sacrifice, highlighting his brave fight against the Kuomintang military criminal commander HU Yi, the warden and other enemies in prison and shows the whole course how he authors Lovely China under such a harsh environment.
Time and Space of “the Past” takes the form of fragmentary flashback to expound on several important events in FANG Zhimin’s revolutionary experience, which sketches the three-dimensional contours for the hero.
HAN Peng, a tenor who played the role of FANG Zhimin, featured a full-fledged and penetrating voice, and achieved a whole-hearted performance for this two-consecutive-hour “marathon”.
The stage collaboration between soprano ZHAO Lili (playing FANG’s wife MIAO Min) and HAN Peng was very tacit. The duet Cuckoo Singing on Azalea pushed the revolutionary romanticism of the whole opera to a climax.
LIU Songhu, resident opera singer of the NCPA, has played the role of HU Yi (Kuomintang military criminal commander) for five consecutive rounds. He not only gave a layered manifestation of HU Yi’s psychological transformation and humanity revival, but added luster to FANG’s lofty ethics.
“Lenin Park” was the most brilliant chorus part in this opera, which depicts FANG’s optimism that “men do farm work and women engage in spinning and weaving, everybody enjoys a simple diet.”
On the evening of August 16th, FANG Zhimin will witness another famed cast including WANG Chong, ZHANG Yang and ZHANG Xin. The opera will continue on until August 18th.
