The LEI Family worked for the Qing Dynasty from the reign of Emperor Kangxi to Emperor Guangxu. The seven generations of the LEI Family designed and directed the building of many imperial projects including imperial palaces, gardens and royal tombs in Beijing. They were the general designers of the imperial construction works.

LEI Siqi, the 6th heir of the family, strictly observed his duty to renovate those buildings. He asked his son LEI Tingchang to make an on-the-spot survey, and he himself made a floor plan and model sample in his ancestral house.

LEI Tingchang, played by ZHAO Ling, is polite and firm. He can be an approachable young carpenter, a mature master that is neither humble nor pushy, or a clever businessman during negotiations.

LEI Siqi, portrayed by WANG Jishi, is a cautious man. He asks his son Tingchang to be loyal, hardworking and honest, and to protect the patrimonial craft art well.

The storyteller played by ZHANG Shuo used the traditional Chinese storytelling to explain this tragi-comical legend of the family about the renovation of Yuanmingyuan Imperial Garden.

Of Guizhi’er and Empress Dowager Cixi, played by NCPA drama artists WANG Wenjie and YANG Qi respectively, one is smart, while the other looks imperatorial. Vivid character shaping intensifies the leading character LEI Tingchang’s fate.
