Under the baton of Italian maestro Rico Saccani, this uproarious full-length opera buffa was presented by A-list international and domestic singers, as well as NCPA Orchestra & Chorus at the beginning of the lunar New Year.
The NCPA production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia premiered in 2011, with the Spanish-style set design still in use today. As the curtain was raised slowly, the winding, twisted and dramatically distorted buildings on stage were brought to the attention of the audience before the singers started to sing.
On the premise of respecting Pier Francesco Maestrini’s conception of directing art, the revival director Alessandra Panzavolta works at many details of performance with great care and makes bold innovations in them, bringing about some change in action design and narrative continuity.
In Act Ⅰ, Mario Cassi sang the most-beloved “Largo al factotum”, shaping the image of a warm-hearted barber that Figaro was all the time, while Xabier Anduaga, who played Count Almaviva, showcased his beautiful voice as a lyric tenor.
NCPA resident singers GUAN Zhijing and LI Xintong, who played Basilio and Berta respectively, and SHANG Chunlai, who sang Fiorello, also won applause from the audience with their consummate singing and performing skills.
Another cast featuring ZHOU Zhengzhong, WANG Hongyao, YANG Zhuolun, Enrico Maria Marabelli and RAN Xiaoyu, will stage their interpretations of Rossini's timeless classic on the 21St and 23rd.
