The NCPA production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia premiered in 2011, with the Spanish-style set design still in use today. As the curtain was raised slowly, the winding, twisted and dramatically distorted buildings on stage were brought to the attention of the audience before the singers started to sing.

On the premise of respecting Pier Francesco Maestrini’s conception of directing art, the revival director Alessandra Panzavolta works at many details of performance with great care and makes bold innovations in them, bringing about some change in action design and narrative continuity.

As the plotline went through, the singers delivered a funny Chinese word or two, making the audience laugh with much hilarity.
