Multiplication was choreographed for dancers of the TAO Dance Theater by CHENG Tsung-lung, who will fill the post of Artistic Director of Cloud Gate. In the dance, he sought to blend his understanding and methods towards body movements into the existed framework of the TAO.

The audience who first know the TAO Dance Theatre may feel curious about the dance’s name 12. For years, TAO Ye has named the dances of “Number Series” by the number of participating dancers. Thus, “12” is the number of Cloud Gate dancers who took part in the work.

TAO Ye challenged the dancers of Cloud Gate with diverse movements to evoke his memory of the fast flowing clouds at Swedish mountain tops.

Autumn Water, Lin Hwai-min’s swan song before his retirement, was performed by senior dancers of Cloud Gate as the grand finale.

At the end of this year, Lin Hwai-min will retire from the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, of which he has been taking charge for 46 years. Selecting Exchange as his last project for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre has a meaning of inheriting and handing over.

LIN Huaimin sighed with emotion: “I have brought the most senior Cloud Gate dancers with me. After this performance, some of them will leave Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, so will I.”
