Adapted from a classic film of the same title directed by SHEN Xiling, Crossroads tells a story about four young people living in a humble abode surrounded by bustling streets of Shanghai in the 1930s.

The drama celebrates friendship, love, and positive attitude towards life, while retaining utterly different personalities of the characters portrayed in the film and development of their fates.

The play is produced by theatre director HUANG Ying in cooperation with playwright XU Weixin, set designer ZHANG Kunpeng, lighting designer HAN Dong, costume designer NING Fangguo, and make-up designer LIN Ying.

As the curtain rose, the projected streetscapes of the 1930s flashed past the back curtain of the stage, taking the audience back to the Shanghai of 1937. Practical significance is conceived in the drama from four dimensions including the film, the data about the film, the filmmaker’s life and the performers’ performance on stage.

The directing technique, which boasts a combination of the video frame with stage performance, brings up a realistic topic that every generation of young people have to face challenges and struggle against their fates to overcome all difficulties and to embrace hope.

From the black-and-white film premiered in 1937 to the stage performance given in 2020, Crossroads initiates a conversation between history and reality by reshaping classic images and extending narration.

Although they live in a bustling city, the four unemployed young people, played by DONG Wenliang, LI Xichang, FENG Yang and YU Mengchao, cannot feel a lively atmosphere. Troubled by unemployment, house rent and future, they make different choices.

XU Zixuan, LIU Beibei and WANG Wenjie, who played Miss YANG, Lady YAO and the landlady, vividly portray different female images that lived during the period.

Crossroads keeps the performers “jumping in and out” during their performance to footnote the film, paying homage to the classic and coming up with the answer to the problem of crossroads faced in and outside story. The drama will continue to be staged until October 25th.
