On April 9th, the NCPA drama The Count of Monte Cristo was revived, which is the second run since its premiere in 2020. The drama is the first NCPA drama production on stage in 2021.
In the evening, the original cast, including YU Yang, SUN Li, ZHAO Ling, WANG Weiguo, LUO Wei, SUN Lishi and FU Pengxu, collaborated to recreate the breathtaking picture of French society, leading the audience into the inner world of the Count of Monte Cristo.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a major production presented by the NCPA in November 2020, created by a team of domestic and international artists including playwright YU Rongjun, director WANG Xiaoying, set designer LIU Kedong, lighting designer XING Xin and costume designer Carla Ricotti.
The drama retains the legendary and dramatic nature of the original novel, exploring critical issues concerning human nature and reflecting on the meaning of revenge, love and forgiveness.
The set design of the play aims for a modern aesthetic impact. The box that represents actual scenes of the prison and Marseilles in the first half, is transformed into an exaggeratedly lavish dance floor, a magnificent living room and solemn courtroom in the second half.
The first half of the drama is an insightful recreation of 19th century French civil society. The young Dantès played by YU Yang, and Mercédès played by SUN Li, delivered the couple's affections. However, when a false accusation letter appears, Dantès is imprisoned and Mercédès feels devastated.
Director WANG Xiaoying has creatively cast two leading male actors to portray the three periods of Dantès’ life. NCPA drama actor ZHAO Ling (right) plays the prisoner Dantès then the Count of Monte Cristo portrayed by YU Yang (left) makes a powerful appearance, embarking on his revenge. At this point, ZHAO Ling’s Prisoner Dantès appears as the Count’s inner self, and the two actors engage in a dialogue between the character and his soul.
At the end, the dialogue between the Count of Monte Cristo and the prisoner Dantès, signifies the meaning behind the revenge – only a liberal, merciful and kind heart is the source of justice and fairness.
The cast presented a three-hour long theatrical feast with SUN Li as the heroine. The drama will run from April 9th to 17th (with a break on the 12th).
