NCPA and Mariinsky Theatre jointly produce Lucia di Lammermoor

The Donizetti opera Lucia di Lammermoor, co-produced by NCPA and the Mariinsky Theatre, will make its debut at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center from April 9th to 12th, unveiling the NCPA Opera Festival 2017. Conducted by Valery Gergiev, directed and designed by Yannis Kokkos, this bel canto opera will be depicted by both Chinese and western singers including Venera Gimadieva, ZHANG Liping, Stefano Secco, SHI Yijie, Macro Caria, ZHANG Yang, Segey Artamonov and TIAN Haojiang.

2017 witnesses the 220th anniversary of Italian composer Donizetti’s birth. To celebrate this opera master, NCPA and the Mariinsky Theatre cooperate again to produce Lucia di Lammermoor after their last joint-release of Eugene Onegin.

The plot of Lucia di Lammermoor is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. It is the tragic story of “a pair of young lovers in two hostile families", with gorgeous orchestration, skillful vocal arias and dramatic scenes. The notable arias including the Sextet and Lucia’s Mad Scene, the latter requiring the high-level singing skills and performance ability of the soprano.

Valery Gergiev who is popular among Chinese audience, will conduct Lucia di Lammermoor. Yannis Kokkos, the director, set designer and costume designer of this production, has closely cooperated with the world’s major theatres. He has created more than 100 stage works with his distinctive style and won the French Chevalier des Arts et Letters, Laurence Olivier Award, Molière Award, Prague Quadrennial Gold Award and so on. This time, he will present the aesthetic features of the late 17th century in Lucia di Lammermoor with a stark colour contrast and metaphorical expressions.

In terms of the cast, sopranos Venera Gimadieva and ZHANG Liping will take on the classic role of Lucia. The beauty of Italian opera will also be presented by Italian Tenor Stefano Secco, Baritone Singer Macro Caria, Russian Baritone Singer Sergey Artamonov, Tenor SHI Yijie, NCPA Opera Singer ZHANG Yang and Chinese Singer TIAN Haojiang.
