Ever since 2009, “Roam about the Classics” has been held every summer at NCPA, aiming to create a relaxing classical music world, and have the audience immersed in the romantic melodies of classical music. This year, with “Four Seasons” as its theme, "Roam about the Classics" will be held from July 13th to 23rd. Five famous orchestras at home and abroad including China NCPA Orchestra, National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, CHAARTS, Beijing Symphony Orchestra and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will perform altogether six concerts, demonstrating different four seasons by nine international composers.
Conductor LÜ Jia, violinist LÜ Siqing, pianist Behzod Abduraimov (from left to right)
On July 13th and 14th, China NCPA Orchestra, under the baton of LÜ Jia, will perform in collaboration with violinist LÜ Siqing and pianist Behzod Abduraimov, presenting Glazunov’s The Seasons: Summer, Op. 67A, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s representative work Scheherazade. Scheherazade was created on the basis of the well-known Arabian folktale collection Arabian Nights, in which summer night imaginations are taken far away by the enchanting Arabian folktales. Also, LÜ Siqing and Abduraimov will perform Barber’s Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at two concerts respectively.
HUANG Yi will lead National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra to stage performance at NCPA
On July 15th, National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of HUANG Yi, will perform Schuman’s Symphony No. 1 In B-flat major “Spring” and Grieg’s In Autumn. Symphony No. 1, which was composed from 1840 to 1841, depicts a spring scene of prosperity in an impassioned musical language. Norwegian composer Grieg’s In Autumn is very poetic as well. In addition, pianist TAN Xiaotang will join hands with the Orchestra to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor.
The CHAARTS
On July 20th, the CHAARTS will perform Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, which will be co-performed with violinist WANG Xiaoming. The two works represent the seasonal charm of Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere respectively, and are often performed together in one concert.. Vivaldi’s Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter will go with sonnets, which make them more soothing and lingering, while Piazzolla’s tango music is full of unique passion of four seasons in South America.
TAN Lihua will lead Beijing Symphony Orchestra to stage performance on July 22nd
On July 22nd, TAN Lihua, Artistic Director of Beijing Symphony Orchestra, will also add colour to “Roam about Classics 2017”. In the first half, audience will enjoy Strauss’ Waltzes. In the second half, an orchestral version of Tchaikovsky’s piano cycle The Seasons will be performed.
Jose Serebrier and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will perform on July 23rd
On July 23rd, the last concert of “Roam about the Classics 2017” will be performed by Jose Serebrier and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. José Serebrier is a great conductor and composer in the classical music world. As a conductor, he has won the Grammy Golden Disk Awards for eight times and 39 nominations for the Award. As a composer, he has won almost all major awards in America. At the 23rd concert, he will lead the Orchestra to perform Winter by Chinese composer YE Xiaogang. This work was composed in 1988, which reveals the composer’s loneliness and confusion when he just arrived in the US. In addition, the ballet clip “The Four Seasons” from Verdi’s opera Les vêpres siciliennes (The Sicilian Vespers) and Glazunov’s The Seasons, Op. 67 will also be performed.
