Following the “Roam about the Classics 2017”, the annual "NCPA August Chorus Festival" will meet the audience during this midsummer. From August 4th to 12th, six choruses from China, Sweden, Denmark and Spain will present eight concerts of different styles at NCPA.
In 2009, the NCPA launched the first August Chorus Festival. For nine years, it has constantly invited first-class choruses at home and abroad to perform works of different periods and schools, to fully present the artistic charm of choral art to the audience.
China NCPA Chorus
During the Festival, melodies of various styles including opera excerpts, solemn and sublime religious songs, exotic folk songs from different countries and popular songs will interweave and clash during this Festival. On August 4th, LÜ Jia will conduct the China NCPA Chorus to kick off the Festival. The first half of the concert will involve excerpts from Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera L'Elisir d'Amore, and Realistic works Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci. The second half will focus on excerpts from Chinese original oepras, including NCPA opera commissions Rickshaw Boy, The Long March, The Ballad of Canal, etc.
China NCPA Orchestra
From August 8th to 9th, LÜ Jia will conduct China NCPA Orchestra and Chorus to interprete Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, also known as “the Choral”. The final movement will be sung in words, which were taken from the Ode to Joy, a poem written by Friedrich Schiller. On August 8th and 9th, the Chorus will join hands with singers SONG Yuanming, ZHU Huiling, XUE Haoyin and LI Xiaoliang to recreate the glorious climax of Ode to Joy for the audience.

Romeo & Julia Kören
On August 12th, a vocal drama concert by the Romeo & Julia Kören from Sweden will wind up the NCPA August Chorus Festival 2017. Romeo & Julia Kören has created a unique “music drama”, a fusion of music, dance and drama. The closing concert will take the audience on a “Renaissance Journey” with several Renaissance works.
Except performances on the stage, NCPA has also specially arranged several public classes and face-to-face communication with performers, creating opportunities for music lovers to be tutored by artists.
The concert on August 4th as well as other concerts will be live streamed on the NCPA Classical Music Channel, so that citizens can also enjoy the beautiful choral performances at home.
