As the Chinese New Year is coming, the NCPA (National Centre for the Performing Arts) will stage three domestic and foreign dancing masterpieces of different styles and themes to wish audiences a happy New Year. Of the three dances, one is
The Nutcracker, a ballet masterpiece of the festive style, the other two being:
Carmen, a passionate Flamenco performance from Spain, and
Celtic Legends, a tap dance from Ireland.
The Guangzhou Ballet will present The Nutcracker
On February 9th-10th, the Guangzhou Ballet's The Nutcracker will be performed first, which premiered in 1892, as a representative work by renowned choreographers Maurice Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and one of the three classic ballet music compositions by the great Russian composer Tchaikovsky. The ballet is of the fairytale style, looking pure but mysterious and suitable for all ages due to its strong artistic appeal, which finds expression in the magnificent spectacle, humorous performance and background music.
Don't miss the mysterious and passionate Carmen during the holiday season
On February 12th-13th, the Ballet Flamenco de Granada, which is from Granada, Spain, will stage a full-length dance drama Carmen for Chinese audience. A well-known tragedy by famous writer Mérimée, Carmen was initially adapted into an opera, becoming one of the most popular long-running masterpieces that have been staged for the largest number of times. The Spanish dancers act out vividly the Gypsies’ ethnic characteristics, such as heroism, passion, pugnacity and resolution, e.g., Carmen “makes a confession of love” uninhibitedly, “clash” intensely with female workers, “performs paso doble” passionately, and makes up her mind to “bid farewell”... Audience will feel Flamenco’s unique charms with excitement.
The traditional Irish dance, music and song will tell you what Ireland really is
During the Chinese New Year from February 17th-21st, the Irish Traditional Tap Dance Celtic Legends, which is full of energy and passion, will be staged. The work was composed with inspiration from the green mountain forest in Connemara, Ireland. The dancers’ passionate footsteps and hundred-percent live instrumental performance can arouse audience’s fantasies about the country, “a green island of jadeite”, in the twinkling of an eye. Tap dancers will show their most enchanting graceful bearing in parts such as “A Long Night”, “Dance of Silver Spear” and “Fox Hunter”, and the most impressive “line dance” will be performed by a dozen people by tapping the floor simultaneously to make the most soul-stirring dynamic rhythms.
