"Domingo Young Artist Programme" launches in China

Maestro Domingo and President CHEN Ping of the NCPA signed a memorandum of cooperation on the NCPA - Domingo Young Artist Programme”

On February 5^th, the acclaimed maestro Plácido Domingo signed a memorandum of cooperation on the “NCPA (National Centre for the Performing Arts) - Domingo Young Artist Programme” with CHEN Ping, President of the NCPA. Both sides aim to bring along Chinese young singers under the programme, to enhance Chinese young singers’ vocal singing and performing abilities and bring them to the forefront on the world opera stage.

In 2012, when he held the 20^th Plácido Domingo's Operalia: World Opera Competition at the NCPA, maestro Domingo forged an strong bond with the NCPA. During the following years, he played the title roles in NCPA operas Nabucco, Simon Boccanegra and Macbeth, making the characters so impressive. At the beginning of 2018, he starred in another NCPA opera Thaïs, the 4^th one for him, in which he played the male protagonist Athanaёl, his high artistic performance captivating the audience.

Maestro Domingo proposed setting up the programme at the NCPA and engaging himself as Artistic Director. This is of great significance to bring along Chinese opera singers, improving their career and sending them onto the world opera stage. He also praised the NCPA for having boosted its repertoire production capacity and level in the last ten years. Particularly, while working on artistic production, the NCPA concentrates on setting up a platform for Chinese singers on the world stage, many of whom have “returned their home stage” through this platform. Meanwhile, the NCPA does its best to nurture young opera actors to cater to the development of opera in China.

At the signing ceremony, maestro Domingo said, “I feel very excited to carry the ‘Domingo Young Artist Programme’ to the NCPA. I will impart my art experience to Chinese young opera singers and help them grow with support from other masters that have music and artistic attainments in the world.”

The programme branch at the NCPA is the first one set up by maestro Domingo with a theatre in Asia. Previously, he set up the programmes at the Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. The NCPA and the maestro plan to run the programme in the coming year, which will be run by the NCPA with maestro Domingo as Artistic Director, who will be responsible for its content, selecting vocal singers, designating instructors and offering them much-needed guidance.
