NCPA opera commission The Long March to launch its fourth run

NCPA June/15/2018
On June 28th to July 3rd, the NCPA commission & Chinese epic opera The Long March will have its fourth run at the Opera House. The Long March will be performed by A-list Chinese singers, such as YAN Weiwen, WANG Hongwei and WANG Zhe, under conductor ZHANG Xian’s baton, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the reform and opening-up and the 97th anniversary of the founding of the CPC.

The Long March will embrace its fourth round in June

On July 1st, 2016, Chinese epic opera commission The Long March, which took the NCPA four years to produce, premiered in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army’s victory in the Long March, presenting an opera that carries forward the Long March spirit. Produced by Chinese artists including composer YIN Qing, librettist ZOU Jingzhi, and directors TIAN Qinxin and YANG Xiaoyang, The Long March is performed in magnificent and revolutionary romantic music on an epic- and contemporary-looking stage, revealing the glorious history of how the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army stepped onto a long journey under leadership of the CPC. YAN Weiwen, WANG Hongwei, WANG Zhe and GONG Shuang head the list of signers, who play characters with a well-rounded portrayal and strong revolutionary will, such as Commissar PENG, Boy Ping, Doctor HONG and WAN Xia (PENG's wife). As the characters’ destiny becomes full of ebb and flow in epitasis, popular classic arias, such as We Will Eventually Win Victory, On the Cold Night and Peach Blossom Blooming in March, begin to be sung one after another, showing the audience how extremely hard and bitter the Long March is, inspiring them with its spirit in diverse styles of music melodies.

After its first run, The Long March was revived twice at the NCPA. On October 22nd, 2016, when the 80th anniversary of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army’s victory in the Long March was celebrated, the opera, which premiered just three months ago, was in its second run and performed for ten sessions. In December 2017, when the 10th anniversary of the NCPA’s inauguration was celebrated, The Long March was staged for a third round. All the tickets have been sold out ahead of schedule in all three rounds.

With his 40-year career on stage, Chinese tenor YAN Weiwen will interpret Commissar PENG once again

In January 2018, opera The Long March was invited to Nanjing by the third China Opera Festival and staged in the Opera House of Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts, starting its first tour, making its debut at the China Opera Festival as an NCPA production. In July 2017, its opera film was launched, and was shown in more than ten cities nationwide to more than 40 universities. In 2018, the NCPA will continuously present six red opera productions, including The Dawns Here Are Quiet, The Long March, Jinsha River, FANG Zhimin, Visitors on the Snow Mountain, and Red Guards on Honghu Lake.
