Roam About the Classics for a cool summer

NCPA June/21/2018
Since its establishment in 2009, Roam About the Classics has been held every summer with classical music performed in a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere, attracting audiences from all over the world. Upholding the idea that “classical music is trendy as well”, the NCPA has organized uniquely programmed concerts with classical pieces for people to enjoy the music and drink beverages offered by the NCPA during intermissions.

From July 18th to 29th, the 10th Roam About the Classics will come again. Themed “Classic Plus”, this series blends classical music with other elements such as rock and roll, ballet, musical, film score and jazz. In 12 days, five outstanding orchestras at home and abroad will stage performances, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, China Trio and National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, in collaboration with Chinese and foreign artists Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Boris Giltburg, Lu Siqing, Li-Wei Qin and SUN Yingdi under the leadership of famous Chinese and foreign conductors Michael Tilson Thomas, Vasily Petrenko, TAN Dun, TAN Lihua and ZHANG Yi respectively.

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

For those who love symphonic music and rock and roll at the same time, they will gain a novel experience on July 18th, when the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will give a special concert. They have adapted many songs by The Beatles into symphonic poems, such as Hey Jude, Yesterday, Imagine and When I Am Sixty-four. On the 19th, they will give a concert of “pure classical”, performing masterpieces composed by masters Walton, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra

On the 20th, ZHANG Yi will raise his baton over the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, performing selected Chinese and foreign ballet suites of different styles and periods such as Fish-Beauty, Spartacus, Rodeo on the Farm, and Daphnis et Chloe.

TAN Dun will conduct the Beijing Symphony Orchestra to perform his “martial arts tetralogy” with China Trio

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Bernstein’s birth. TAN Lihua will join hands with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra to perform West Side Story and Candide, to show audiences the charming melodies from Broadway. On the 27th, TAN Dun will conduct the Beijing Symphony Orchestra to perform his “martial arts tetralogy” with China Trio members LU Siqing, Li-Wei Qin and SUN Yingdi. Film highlights will be shown live to offer an audiovisual feast of symphonic music on the big screen.

Beijing Symphony Orchestra

Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas and National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America are invited to the closing concert. On the 29th, they will perform Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet to show endless charms of jazz symphony accompanied by vibrant rhythms and humorous jazz melodies.
