NCPA drama The Birds returns in September

NCPA August/15/2018
Drama The Birds, the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes’ work and produced by NCPA, will be presented on September 1st-8th again.

The Birds is the first NCPA production adapted from an ancient Greek comedy, which was premiered in April 2018. Performed by NCPA Drama Ensemble members, the drama is co-directed by drama director LUO Jinlin and his daughter, drama educator LUO Tong. They both have been engaging in ancient Greek drama research in their lifelong careers.

Pisthetaerus, Euelpides and the birds

The Birds relies on a simple stage, which mirrors “Cloud Cuckoo Land” by means of paper elements. The storyline is humorous with distinctive comedy features, which not only sparkles as a romantic poetry and soaring imagination, but also implies sarcasm and reality. It is noteworthy to mention that the comedy creatively uses “singing team”, a special form of ancient Greek drama. The members do not only imitate the form of various birds, but also function as a “singing team”, by means of demonstrating the unique charms of the bird family by singing, dancing and chanting.

Prometheus comes to the earth sneakily

Members of the NCPA Drama Ensemble spare no effort for the first round of the drama The Tempest by Shakespeare. This August, the spirit Ariel, who helps Duke Prospero solve difficulties in The Tempest, will become Hoopoe after punishment imposed by Zeus in The Birds. The slave Caliban turns into Pisthetaerus, top hero in the creation of “Cloud Cuckoo Land”. King, duke, ministers, captain, sailors and spirits, who are confronted with a tempest at sea, change into the gods, mortals and birds in The Birds.
