Joyce DiDonato shined on the NCPA stage

NCPA January/12/2019
On January 11th, the mezzo-soprano superstar Joyce DiDonato, Il Pomo d’Oro and lead conductor of the orchestra Maxim Emelyanychev brought the In War & Peace concert at the NCPA. In pure Baroque music, Joyce DiDonato brought the call of the soul through stunning songs and delivered a declaration of peace to the world.

Before the opening, Joyce DiDonato sat on the stage in a black dress.

Before the opening, the immersive design made the audience feel the novelty of this performance. In the Concert Hall, there was wind sounded in the ears and smoke on the dim stage. Joyce DiDonato, wearing a black dress, was sitting quietly in the mist. The half-naked male dancer was lying on the floor as motionless as a statue. The two were like night elves with broken wings and brought the audience into mysterious chaos.

Every piece of the “war” theme firmly grasped the ears of the audience.

When the music started, DiDonato appeared in a black dress and barefooted, with heavy makeup. Every piece of the “war” theme in the first half of the concert firmly grasped the ears of the audience. Her voice was bright like a gorgeous emerald, and her vocalization was clear and perfect. When she stood on stage, she instantly got into character.

When she stood on stage, she instantly got into character.

As the performance went on, the multimedia picture constantly changed the patterns. The bloody red rings, the falling raindrops, and the falling leaves made the stage space greatly extended, breaking the time and space limit and immersing audience in the fates of the protagonists in the war scenes.

In the second half, DiDonato put on a sparkling gray dress and fresh make-up.

In the second half, DiDonato put on a sparkling gray dress and fresh make-up. The dress with “peaceful” meaning was as dazzling as a diamond, which made people feel so refreshed. The instrumental music Da Pacem, Domine played by Il Pomo d’Oro seemed to be the sound from ancient times with the magical effect of decompression, relaxation and healing.

In Handel’s Augelletti, Che Cantate, DiDonato played Almirena again. Unlike Lascia Ch'io Pianga in the first half of the concert, this aria expressed her love to Rinaldo. DiDonato sang the girl’s heart with a simple voice. The unique sounds of ancient harpsichord, clarinet, and the orbo depicted the tranquility of the forest. The beautiful and romantic voice, was in sharp contrast with Almirena’s lament in the war scenes in the first half of the concert, which got the audience thinking about “war and peace.”
