On July 13th, the 5th Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition (IBCC), hosted by NCPA and organized by the Beijing Morning Star Ballet Foundation, formally kicked off at NCPA. 116 players from different countries and regions, such as China, the USA, Canada, Russia and South Africa, qualified for the next round and will continue to compete intensely against one another. The jury of 14 world-class artists will decide on a number of awards.

On the afternoon of 13
th, a press conference was held and attended by ZHU Jing, Vice President of NCPA, ZHAO Ruheng, Dance Art Director of NCPA, Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Director of the Arts Council, and 14 judges for the Classical Ballet Competition and Choreography Competition. They gave a presentation of the competition schedule and many highlights. On the evening of 13
th, an opening ceremony was grandly held in the NCPA Theatre, where four specially invited hosts, including YIN Fang, ZHANG Jian, CAO Chi and TAN Yuanyuan, gave fantastic performances in conjunction with the previous prizewinners, ballet students of the Affiliated Secondary School of Beijing Dance Academy, and students of the Morning Star Arts Centre. They, as well as the judges, players and audience, witnessed the glorious moment when the competition was kicked off.

The IBCC is a national-level international competition established with the guidance and approval of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and has been successfully held for four times since 2011. This year marks the 70
th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and the 5
th IBCC is themed by “Homage to Chinese Ballet” in order to showcase the fruitful development of the Chinese ballet and promote the international development of the ballet art.
To highlight the theme of “Homage to Chinese Ballet”, special planning has been made for this year’s competition system, opening and closing ceremonies and ballet gala. Moreover, many other activities, such as high-end interviews, Master Workshops, Master Classes, Ballet Retrospective, Ballet Sculpture Exhibition and Summer Camp, will be carried out, too.
14 internationally renowned dance artists have been specially invited to this year’s competition to serve as members of the jury. They will make objective and professional comments on the players in the principle of fairness.
