From November 25th to 27th, maestro Valery Gergiev will appear at the NCPA “Pure Classical” 2019 with the Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus. The Mariinsky Orchestra will perform works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Wagner and Berlioz in Beijing.
Valery Gergiev with the Mariinsky Orchestra
Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra presented an all-Tchaikovsky concert in Beijing in 2011, and since then, they have played a Russian composer’s works in Beijing almost every year. They have played the works by Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Mussorgsky. On November 25th, Gergiev lead the orchestra to perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpieces.

At the upcoming concert, the audience will enjoy Korsakov’s suite from the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, Scheherazade and the third act of his opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya, which was composed in 1905 in his later years based on the conflicts between the ancient Russians and Tatar people. The audience will feel a narrative and dramatic Russian tone-painting created by Rimsky-Korsakov in gorgeous and colorful orchestrations and melodies.
Mariinsky Ballet in The Firebird
On November 26th, Gergiev lead the Mariinsky Orchestra and singers from the Mariinsky Theatre to play Wagner’s swan song Parsifal. Based on The Legend of the Grail, Parsifal has a strong religious colour and tells a story about rejection and salvation.
Mariinsky Ballet in Don Quixote
Additionally, the Mariinsky Orchestra has put many European composers’ works in its repertoire under Gergiev’s leadership. “You can hear the true voice of Russia at the Mariinsky Theatre, but this orchestra renders Berlioz, Puccini, Mozart or Wagner’s works perfectly, too,” said Gergiev. On November 27th, the Mariinsky Orchestra will present an all-Berlioz concert featuring Symphonie Fantastique and Act Five from the opera Les Troyens.
Mariinsky Ballet in Arabian Nights
Adhering to the idea of benefiting the people with art, the NCPA has introduced an early booking discount policy. The tickets are priced at 680 yuan, 520 yuan and 380 yuan, respectively, but those who buy tickets before October 31st can enjoy a 25% discount.
Mariinsky Ballet in La Sylphide
After giving three concerts, the Mariinsky Orchestra will accompany the Mariinsky Ballet when it performs Don Quixote, La Sylphide and Arabian Nights on stage from November 28th to December 1st.
