On September 2nd, Wuhan 2020 opened the first performance of the Taihu Performing Arts Week, a concert by the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, at the NCPA Taihu Art Centre. It is a symphonic overture of special significance commissioned by the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra, and composed by Enjott Schneider. From conception to release in just 14 days, this work expresses the concern of the German composer who uses art to support the epidemic prevention and control in Wuhan and China. Full of hope and emotion, it deeply touched the audience, and the warmth and power of art brought everyone’s heart together.

Except for Wuhan 2020, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra interpreted Symphony No.7 in A major by Beethoven under the baton of LI Biao. They gave such a masterful rendition of this atmospheric symphony that the audience were thrilled.

NCPA Taihu Performing Arts Week 2020 continues the theme of “Cultural Beijing-Performing Arts in Taihu”, expressing patriotism and passing on classic works. The colourful performances will contribute to the cultural prosperity of performing arts, boost the development of the Taihu Performing Arts Town, and assist in the construction of the sub-centre of Beijing.

In addition to the well-planned high-quality performances, public benefit performances will also be carried out in the Taihu Performing Arts Week. During the Arts Week, the NCPA Taihu Art Centre adheres to the regular epidemic prevention and control measures and keep attendances at the theatre below 50 per cent; performances are sold at low prices, allowing more people to enjoy high art in the theatre. Moreover, six public welfare seats will be set up in each performance for the special (needy) people in Taihu Town to enjoy the infinite charm of art in the “theatre at the doorstep”.

On September 16th, a special performance will be staged in the Taihu Open-air theatre by Voice of the Heart Art Troupe of Menghe Film & TV, a special group composed of disabled performers. Their passion and strength on the stage will impress and inspire all audience. For this special performance, the NCPA Taihu Art Centre will adopt the approach of “free tickets but not free admission”. The staff will distribute the tickets in advance to volunteers, community residents, health care workers, teachers and students at colleges and middle schools involved in the epidemic prevention and control in the sub-centre, so as to expand access to the arts for the benefit of the wider public.
