ABOUT

In 2011, the NCPA held the first Beijing Stage Design Invitation Exhibition, building a platform where audiences can enjoy stage art from a unique perspective. The exhibition has received an enthusiastic response from society and is honoured as the "Beijing Quadrennial Exhibition" by the stage art insiders.

Themed "Boundless", this year's exhibition aims at revealing how the boundaries between the contemporary set design and other fields of art has been broken. Also, it showcases various stage designers' cross-cultural background and more new roles they play off the stage, as well as how they have gone global and participated in international stage creations.

We sincerely hope that the "Beijing Stage Design Invitation Exhibition" will serve as an important platform where we can communicate with artists from different fields about their disruptive ideas, connect the stage with audiences and link China to the world.

Finally, I wish the exhibition a great success!

STAGE DESIGNERS

With the rapid development of theatre art, the Beijing Stage Design Invitation Exhibition is held every four years to showcase the achievements of stage arts so that audiences can understand more behind-the-scenes stories and experts can observe the latest trends. Meanwhile, the documentation value of the records can be used for future generations.

While Chinese stage designers are expanding their horizon, they start to think deeply about their own creative standpoints. Since the start of the new century, the diverse stage art has seeked more about the culture foundations and the source of formal languages, starting a conscientious exploration on how to combine local aesthetic heritages with the contemporary global context, which would achieve valuable results. We hope that in the future, a more contemporary design method will be adopted, and the knowledge structure will be the same as our international counterparts'.

Designer may even design more centralized and intense scenery for an exhibition hall than for the stage. Due to a lack of theatrical elements, there seems to be a paradox of the stage art at exhibitions. However, the paradox inspires audience to piece out the context in their imagination to create tension between communication and reception. That’s the value of this exhibition would like to offer.
