ABOUT

The Kunqu Opera (Kunju Opera) is a traditional Chinese vocal singing art and can be traced back to the late Yuan Dynasty, more than 600 years ago. Having given birth to more than 100 emerging local genres of opera, Kunqu Opera is crowned as “the mother of Chinese Operas”.

On May 18th, 2001, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed the Chinese Kunqu Opera art a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity” by a unanimous vote. It’s one of the only four of the 19 “masterpieces” approved by the international jury in a unanimous decision.

On the occasion of the 2nd Kunqu Opera Festival, the NCPA holds the “Graceful Voice—Exhibition of Kunqu Opera Art” to carry forward the culture of Kunqu Opera art.
