INTRODUCTION

Since the 1990s, WU Weishan has created nearly 500 sculptures of Chinese historical and cultural celebrities, including Lao Tzu, Confucius, LI bai, DU Fu, TANG Xianzu, QI Baishi, NIE Er and many others. He has become the most productive sculptor on this subject in China. In addition, he pioneered the “On Expressive Sculpture”, which features both realism and abstraction and focuses on the character of the figures, resulting in a style of sculpture that resonates with traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, which does not pursue objective representation but aims to express the soul of the figures. WU Weishan’s sculptures highlight the personality traits and strength of the figures, and the cultural backgrounds and spirit of the times, not only presenting the cultural giants of China, but also delivering Chinese beliefs and aesthetic values to the world.

As an important platform to promote traditional Chinese culture and to showcase the image of Beijing, NCPA aims to present Chinese culture to the world from a global perspective. The exhibition will be a refreshing art feast for the audience, providing them with a “Chinese Style” interpreted by WU Weishan’s sculptural language.
