NCPA opera Der Rosenkavalier will be staged in June


NCPA opera Der Rosenkavalier, composed by Richard Strauss, will be presented from June 7th to June 10th. This year, NCPA will once again invite the internationally-renowned director Gilbert Deflo, famous choreographer Alessandro Camera and well-known German conductor Sebastian Lang-Lessing and other artists to join. In this opera, the Chinese vocalists LIANG Ning and HUANG Ying will continue to interpret this romantic opera. Michaela Kaune and Caitlin Hulcup, who sparkled in the first round of this opera, will hold the spotlight on the stage again. In addition, the famous vocalists Bjarni Thor Kristinsson and Lina Johnson will also participate in this performance.

NCPA opera Der Rosenkavalier was debuted in 2015

In the first round of performance, director Gilbert Deflo demonstrated his unique way of thinking and style personality, and showed the extraordinary charm of this German opera for audiences. Alessandro Camera, who received the Gassman Award as Best Set Designer, will present Vienna noble society of the 18th century with a concise and visually-shocking stage set. The nostalgic Vienna scenery carefully set by the cast team and customs delicately restoring details of the era will once again strike a pose. When the curtain is raised, accompanied by melody from the orchestra pit, the beautiful visual picture of the stage will be also slowly rolled out.

Sebastian Lang-Lessing will continue to serve as the conductor. Due to the delicate interpretation of opera music, Sebastian Lang-Lessing will be able to highlight dramatic effect of this opera. After the first round of performance, it was commented that “Lang-Lessing not only infuses pure atmosphere of Vienna into the music, but also makes the orchestra achieve clear and stable rhythm despite complexity of this masterpiece.”

A classic plot in the opera

The current round also features a strong cast. Michaela Kaune, who played the role of “Marschallin” in the first round of performance, will perform on stage again and co-star together with the Dutch mezzo-soprano Annemarie Kremer. The leading male role of “Octavian”, which is taken on by mezzo-sopranos, will be starred by the Chinese vocalist LIANG Ning and the Australian singer Caitlin Hulcup again. Soprano HUANG Ying and Lina Johnson will jointly play the role of “Sophie” who falls in love at first sight of “the Knight of the Rose” when receiving “silver rose”.

The Un Ballo in Maschera is adapted based on the story of assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden in the 18th century. Through fictional odd story, the opera reveals Amelia's ambivalence when pursuing extramarital romantic love and safeguarding her husband's dignity, and rolls out the real high life of Italy in the 18th century.
