NCPA Opera The Red Guards on Honghu Lake to be revived soon

NCPA July/28/2021
From August 10th to 15th, the NCPA opera The Red Guards on Honghu Lake will have its sixth revival. Under the baton of ZHANG Guoyong, the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra will join hands with first-class Chinese singers WANG Qingshuang, MA Yaqin, WANG Kai, QIN Desong, GUAN Zhijing, HUANG Yanming, HUANG Huali and MENG Meng, as well as the NCPA Opera Singers, Chorus and Drama Ensemble, to pay tribute to the classics and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC with this national opera.

Premiered in 1959, the opera The Red Guards on Honghu Lake was scripted by ZHANG Jing’an, YANG Huizhao, OUYANG Qianshu, ZHU Benhe and MEI Shaoshan, and composed by ZHANG Jing’an and OUYANG Qianshu. The opera became a hit on its release across China with its distinctive, catchy and beautiful melodies.

In 2012, the NCPA collaborated with the Hubei Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, the copyright holder of The Red Guards on Honghu Lake, to revive the opera. They invited the top-tier domestic creative team led by renowned director ZHANG Jigang to work on the production, which gained a new charm after two years of meticulous preparations and creations. To make it more educational, realistic and artistically appealing, the creative team polished the opera from music, performance to its stage design.

In this run, singer WANG Qingshuang will play heroine HAN Ying. Though five rounds of performances, WANG has given a believable portrayal of the heroic and courageous heroine. MA Yaqin, the fourth actress who has ever sung HAN Ying, will also join the cast to present the thrilling story.

Except for the much-anticipated heroine HAN Ying, the roles of LIU Chuang, PENG Batian, and HAN’s mother are also highly expected by the audience. Opera singers WANG Kai and QIN Desong, who used to play the role of LIU Chuang, will sing the role again, the fearless revolutionary. GUAN Zhijing and HUANG Yanming will act as PENG Batian, the antagonist in the opera. Renowned soprano HUANG Huali will once again join the cast to portray the touching mother-daughter relationship. DU Xudong, who played the role of WANG Jinbiao in the TV drama The Red Guards on Honghu Lake, will make the character shine on the grand opera stage.
