NCPA August/02/2021
On July 31st, the NCPA “Inheritance and Classics: 600th Weekend Concert” kicked off at Concert Hall. Under the baton of ZHANG Yi, the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra performed many Chinese and Western music classics with violinist Siqing Lu and pipa artist ZHANG Hongyan.

On July 31st, the 600th "Weekend Concert" kicked off at the NCPA Concert Hall.

The concert kicked off with Tchaikovsky’s Grande Polonaise Brillante from the third act of the opera Eugene Onegin. ZHANG Yi gave a comprehensive introduction, which allowed the audience to learn more about music appreciation while enjoying music.

Under the baton of ZHANG Yi, the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra performed many Chinese and Western music classics.

Then, Glazunov’s Concert Waltz No. 1 was staged. The violinist Siqing Lu and pipa artist ZHANG Hongyan worked with the orchestra in the performances of ZHAO Jiping’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and WU Zuqiang’s A Moonlit Night on The Spring River, a pipa piece adapted from an ancient tune of the same title. Their vivid interpretation of the music won warm applause from the audience. ZHANG Yi explained the profound in simple terms, deepening the audience’s understanding of musical compositions.

Violinist Siqing Lu performed ZHAO Jiping’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra.

Although it was the first time for Siqing Lu to appear at the Weekend Concert, he has been an old friend of the NCPA as Artistic Director of NCPA May Festival. He said, “the NCPA has done a quite solid job in popularising classical music. Especially, it has organised lots of performances and events for art popularisation and public interests, drawing the audience closer to classical music.”

Pipa artist ZHANG Hongyan presented WU Zuqiang’s A Moonlit Night on The Spring River.

The pipa artist ZHANG Hongyan has given many stellar performances at the Weekend Concert. She said, “Music embodies the cultural spirit of a country, a nation and even all humanity. It has great power. For example, A Moonlit Night on The Spring River, though being hundreds of years old, remains alive today, and can still be shared with the audience. I suppose it may be the power of today’s theme, ‘Inheritance and Classics’.”

The composer Mr. DU Xinming’s symphonic poem Flutter, Army Flag appeared as finale of the concert to welcome the Army Day.

Since the Weekend Concert was held for the first time on January 13th, 2008, more than 900 Chinese and foreign composers’ over 2,000 works have been staged in more than 600 performances presented by a total of more than 60 performing art groups and more than 100 artists on invitation, benefiting an audience totaling above 900,000.

As an important public-spirited brand, the “Weekend Concert” covers a variety of art forms including symphony, national orchestral music, symphonic orchestral music, chorus and chamber music. Well-known Chinese and foreign orchestras and artists are invited to give performances at the concert. Over the years, five series have been orchestrated including the “Family Concert”, “Must-Hear Symphonic Music”, “Chinese National Music”, “Classic Chorus” and “Classic Chamber Music”; in 2021, concert series including “One Hundred Years of Chinese Masterpieces” and “Dream of Ice and Snow: Dating for Winter Olympics” have been specially planned and held.

Over the past 14 years, the “Weekend Concert” has insisted on benefiting the people by “offering them cheap tickets for performances given by famous artists and orchestras”, and paid constant attention to adolescents and music lovers, receiving recognition and support from all walks of life. In the future, the NCPA “Weekend Concert” will continue to give back to the public with virtuoso performances to take deeper roots in the folk society, enhance the cultural confidence, carry forward the national spirit and play the melodies of the times loudly and proudly.
