On November 29th and 30th, the Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music 2021 hosted by the NCPA will be held via video conference. Themed “Vision and Innovation for a Shared Future”, this year’s forum will be held online in the presence of more than 100 industry representatives from 70 international art institutions in more than 20 countries and regions across five continents. The attendees will explore new possibilities for the future development of symphonic music.

As spiritual and cultural wealth shared by humankind, symphonic music reflects the spirit and cultural characteristics of different nationalities, regions and times. In November 2019, the first Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music was held with great success at the NCPA. The participants, including orchestras and art institutions from all over the world, reached the “Beijing Consensus” to deepen exchanges and mutual learning, build a profound, standard and regular cooperation mechanism, and jointly establish a community of shared destiny for sustainable development of symphonic music. The first forum received high praise.

With the continuous innovation of communication technology, people’s lifestyle, thinking pattern and communication mode are quietly changing, posing new complex challenges to the popularisation of symphonic music and also bringing new opportunities to its development. People who have a great passion for symphonic music contribute their wisdom and strength to retaining its vitality and better inheriting the symphonic art in the new era. The Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music 2021 will be held via videoconferencing for the first time to further promote exchange, mutual learning and the sharing of industry operation experience. Practitioners from home and abroad will have an in-depth exchange with one another and deepen their cooperation to drive the development of the industry in new manners.

The forum is receiving blessings from Chinese and foreign artists. The conductor Valery Gergiev expressed, “I sincerely hope that young Chinese artists will make more contributions to classical music in the coming decades.” The conductor Daniel Barenboim said, “Let’s always remember the great significance of music. I would like to send all my good wishes to the conference in Beijing.” The conductor Vasily Petrenko indicated, “We’ll usher in a brighter future as long as all of us work together to make innovations.”

At the press conference, ZHANG Yi, Music Director of the National Ballet of China, expressed his warm congratulations on the Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music 2021. He said, “The spectacle of the Forum 2019 seems to remain vivid in my mind. How fast time flies! But many great changes have taken place over the past two years. It is a question that how to perform and develop symphonic music during the pandemic. Meanwhile, we are unsure about what should do to go ahead with such art and attract more attention to it in the hard times. This is a challenge to the whole world.”

Violinist Siqing Lu

Violinist Siqing Lu said, “It is very important to develop audience for classical music, and it behooves us to bring music to more people. I think we should communicate more with our international counterparts about how to sustain the vitality of music and how to create better cooperation. No matter what we do, we aim ultimately to help the audience enjoy music to the full.”

The Forum has received active response from the world’s top orchestras and art institutions. More than 100 guests from around the world will gather together online. The opening ceremony and keynote speeches will begin at 20:00 on November 29th; two thematic forums and the closing ceremony will start at 16:30 on the 30th.

Themed “Vision and Innovation for a Shared Future”, the Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music 2021, as an international, open and leading platform, is aimed to study and discuss the global development trend of symphonic music and relevant frontier issues to promote the cross-regional and cross-industry expansion of symphonic music. The forum will focus on two major topics, “Sustainable Development of Symphony” and “Symphony Orchestras & Theatres: A City’s Cultural Landmarks”, covering sub-topics such as “Cultivating and Supporting Young Artists”, “Commissioning and Promoting New Works”, and “Empowering Symphonic Music with Technology”. Heads of world-class orchestras and art institutions, including The Berliner Philharmoniker, The Concertgebouworkest and Dresden Music Festival, as well as artists from well-known Chinese orchestras, art institutions and art colleges including the Central Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, China National Symphony Orchestra and China NCPA Orchestra, will hold a dialogue at the thematic forum on November 30th for an in-depth discussion on the challenges and opportunities confronting the industry. Overseas attendees will give vivid examples to illustrate how to undertake new projects, develop new audience and exploit new channels during the special period; domestic attendees will actively share China’s ideas, wisdom and solutions to show how to work on the inheritance of Chinese cultural treasures and the global expression of Chinese stories and voices.
