At 19:00 on July 19th, the NCPA will mark a major milestone in its “Live Simulcast” series with the first-ever nationwide live broadcast of Mozart’s timeless masterpiece Le Nozze di Figaro. This world-class opera will be streamed live from the NCPA stage to cinemas and theatres across more than 30 cities in China, allowing audiences around the country to experience the magic of opera in real time.
The NCPA “Live Simulcast” initiative made its live broadcast debut on April 19th with the drama LIN Zexu, achieving unprecedented success and making the real-time sharing of art across spatial boundaries a reality. Now, on July 19th, the NCPA will launch its first live opera broadcast, presenting the NCPA production of Le Nozze di Figaro to audiences across China with international-caliber artistry and production standards—furthering the goal of making elegant art accessible to all.
This landmark broadcast employs cutting-edge 4K ultra-high-definition video and 5.1-channel surround sound technology, delivering a fully immersive theatrical experience. Live opera broadcasting places exceptionally high demands on audio fidelity and real-time coordination. With the entire opera sung in Italian, it also poses substantial challenges for accurate, synchronized Chinese subtitles. The upcoming broadcast will overcome a series of technical obstacles to present a seamless experience across nearly 100 participating venues, allowing audiences to enjoy a world-class production by Chinese and international artists right in their local theatres.
The NCPA’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro premiered in 2013, directed by renowned Spanish opera director José Luis Castro. The creative team presents a classically styled stage set that vividly recreates 18th century Seville, faithfully capturing the comedic spirit of the original work.
The current round of live performances will take place from July 15th to 20th. LÜ Jia, NCPA's Artistic Director of Music, will conduct the China NCPA Orchestra and Chorus, joined by a distinguished cast of Chinese and international vocalists renowned for their interpretations of Mozart’s operas on the world stage. The July 19th broadcast performance will feature Markus Paul Werba, Benedetta Torre, Alessandro Luongo, Mariya Mudryak, Miriam Albano, GUAN Zhijing, WANG Jing, CHENG Wenhui, KOU Jing, DU Ang, and LIANG Yufeng, among others.
Before and during intermission of the “Live Simulcast” broadcast, celebrated TV host LI Jiaming and soprano ZHANG Liping will take audiences behind the scenes for a deep dive into the production. During the intermission, LI Jiaming will also engage in conversations with conductor LÜ Jia and chorus master JIAO Miao, offering insight into the opera’s vocal and musical aesthetics. Simultaneously, the cameras will explore backstage moments, following ZHANG Liping as she visits the principal cast and unveiling the intricate set transitions, giving audiences an immersive look into the making of this classic opera.
