ABOUT

Beijing Quadrennial Invitational Exhibition of Stage Design has passed 12 years since it was first held at the NCPA in 2011. This year’s exhibition, with the theme of “reshaping”, showcases the recent works of 23 outstanding Chinese stage art artists. They come from different fields such as stage art design, costume, lighting, and multimedia-integrated art installation. There are not only masters who have devoted themselves to the art, but also backbones of the industry, as well as emerging talents with unique perspectives. From their exhibited works, we can see artists’ thoughts and feelings towards the development of the era, and also take a glimpse of the new features and explorations of the Chinese stage art industry.

CONTENTS

Contemporary stage art has long surpassed its traditional meaning or concept. It’s no longer a byproduct of theatre or a backdrop decoration for performances. Its spatial dimension is no longer seen as a traditional theatre space, but a cultural and social space. Stage art has multiple modes of presentation that take place anywhere. It is closely related to anything involving landscape, venues and environment, and is also a way to construct the physical, perceptual, and mental atmosphere of events. Stage art design, action, and scenes have greatly intervened in social life and have become cultural phenomena with contemporary characteristics.
