INTRODUCTION

2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and 85th anniversary of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army’s victory in the Long March. As the collector of the classic work The Red Ribbon on the Earth, the Beijing Fine Art Academy has worked with the NCPA and Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles in launching the exhibition “The Red Ribbon on the Earth: SHEN Yaoyi’s Illustrated Stories of the Long March”.

SHEN Yaoyi

In 1943, SHEN Yaoyi was born in Shanghai. In 1961 and 1966, he graduated from High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts and LI Hua Studio of Department of Printmaking, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, respectively. He has devoted to artistic teaching and artistic creation.

From 1973 to 2009, he served as Professor and Doctoral Supervisor in Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Stage Art, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and School of Arts, Renmin University of China. He is currently Honourary Chair of Comic Strip Art Committee under China Artists Association, and Member of National Artistic Creation Committee on Major Themes. He was appraised as “Outstanding Expert” by the Chinese Ministry of Culture in 1992. In 1999, he won a title of “Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”, which was awarded by the Chinese Ministry of Personnel.
From 1975 onwards, SHEN Yaoyi retraced the route of the Long March several times, creating a Long March series in the spirit of the Long March. From 1988 to 1993, he spent six years on his illustrated work, The Red Ribbon on the Earth. Later, he created two more works, The Long March in 1936 and Sparks in the Long March, to describe how the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army plodded along the Long March, how the West Route Army went on an expedition to the Western China, how a guerrilla war lasted three years in Southern China, and how the Northern Shaanxi Revolutionary Base Area was constructed. The three works are relatively independent of one another but unified together as a whole. The “Long March Trilogy” is a panoramic presentation of the Long March.
