  Celebrating the Chinese New Year

  Celebrating the imminent start of the Chinese New Year on February 10^th, 2024, China’s NCPA Orchestra presents an astounding selection of works by Chinese and Western composers. The rousing Spring Festival Overture begins the programme with a performance done in partnership with the China National Traditional Orchestra along with three other orchestras. We also hear Ravel’s Boléro and MA Sicong’s Second Symphony following. Listeners will be thrilled by pipa virtuoso LI Jia’s performance of the concerto Little Sisters of the Grassland, and the broadcast closes with LÜ Jia conducting Brahms' Symphony No. 3.

  ZHAO Jiping & Mahler in Beijing

  Violinist NING Feng performs ZHAO Jiping's beautiful violin concerto with the National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra in a performance led by LÜ Jia. Fair Flowers Under Full Moon by HUANG Yijun is heard in a presentation with the China National Traditional Orchestra and others. Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 closes out the programme, with ZHANG Yi at the podium.

  Bruckner’s Seventh & GUO’s Riyue Mountain

  GUO Wenjing’s Passacaglia for Orchestra is a work inspired by prehistoric rock paintings in ancient caves on Riyue Mountain. LI Biao leads the China NCPA Orchestra, painting a stunning tonal picture underpinned by a repeating phrase punctuated by deep drum hits and lush strings. Bruckner’s lyrical Seventh Symphony completes the programme, conducted by LÜ Jia.

  Beethoven, Dvořák, Rodrigo, and ZHOU

  Beethoven’s idyllic sounds of the countryside, Joaquín Rodrigo’s Spanish gardens, ZHOU Tian’s Song Lyrics and the folk tunes of Dvořák’s Bohemia come to life in China’s capital city as we visit the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing for a new series of concert performances. Our concert features the Centre’s resident orchestra China NCPA Orchestra with guitar soloist Rafael Aguirre and the Shanghai Quartet.

  We’ll sample some fascinating music from China in our next concert from the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Including a concerto for pipa, music for voice and orchestra, and CHEN Peixun’s sublime and cinematic Symphony No. 1. Led by the NCPA’s music director LÜ Jia.

  One of the most monumental and complex works for the orchestra; Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 is an intense piece full of internal conflict and struggle. Conductor LÜ Jia and the NCPA Orchestra bring this work to life in Beijing along with celebrated Chinese composer CHEN Peixun’s Symphonic Poem “Wave of Emotion”.
