On October 1st, 2022, the National Theatre of China documentary drama The Literature and Art in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression held its premiere at the NCPA's Theatre.
It is the first documentary drama to be launched by the National Theatre of China. The drama boasts outstanding creators and artists from the fields of film, music and art.
Upholding the principles of cultural inheritance and innovation, the creative team carefully consulted the historical data about the Anti-Japanese War and brought history alive on the stage with the writers and artists in real historical events as drama characters, reproducing the passionate feelings of the Chinese literary and artistic predecessors.
The drama boasts a simple stage space and a rich multi-structure, with technology, multimedia, classic movie clips, art, music and other elements employed on stage to retrace the spirituality of Anti-Japanese literature and art.
It displays the tribulations of the war and reconstruct the history of anti-Japanese literature and art, as well as the true features of life led by the writers and artists in those days.
In terms of stage composition, there is a wide screen above nine small screens, which can be one and can also be split for different scenes, including close-up and distant ones, with various types of historical facts artistically processed to exaggerate the historical atmosphere. The drama is a mixture of what characterises the installation video art and theatrical art.
The drama is a stage version of history written by means of documentary data mining and analysing. The artists perform with deep feelings, acting out the Chinese literary and artistic predecessors' profound national sentiments. The performers not only portray chorus narrators, but bring out cultural celebrities in the history of the Anti-Japanese War. Accordingly, they are both narrators and characters. The whole drama is presented both on the stage and through the video.
