NCPA Opera Aida returns in triumph tonight

Tonight, the NCPA's first grand opera Aida, opened for its third round. Under the baton of Renato Palumbo, the NCPA Resident Singers, China NCPA Chorus and Orchestra gave an exquisite and emotionally touching performance in cooperation with world-renowned singers including Susanna Branchini, Jorge de León, Anastasia Boldyreva, Dalibor Jenis, Adriano Gramigni, GUAN Zhijing, ZHANG Wenqin, and KOU Jing.

Conductor Renato Palumbo has had many collaborations with the NCPA on Norma, Un Ballo in Maschera and Falstaff.

Susanna Branchini gave a vivid interpretation of the heroine Aida’s tough choice between her lover and her father, and between her love and her nation, as well as the drastic changes in her emotions.

With a sonorous voice and lustrous timbre, Jorge de León, who played Radames, sang the grand opening aria with ease. As a tenor, his melodious heroic voice received bursts of cheers.

The mezzo-soprano Anastasia Boldyreva (right) held an accurate grasp of the character Princess Amneris. When singing her duet Fu la sorte dell'armi a tuoi funesta, she portrayed the character in an impressive manner with consummate stage skills.

To rebuild the “Egypt in history”, the NCPA has done a masterpiece in set design. The boundless desert and blue water came into view, with the magnificent natural scene in a sharp contrast to the great human civilization.

The towering steel-like ship, lofty Egyptian temple and majestic scene amazed the audience.

Tomorrow evening, the opera will star SUN Xiuwei, WANG Chong, NIU Shasha, ZHANG Yang, etc., who are Chinese singers well-loved by the audience. This round of performances will last until November 5th.
