In order to commemorate the centennial anniversary of renowned Chinese dramatist Mr. WU Zuguang’s birth, NCPA drama Returning Home on a Snowy Night will be presented in the seventh round on June 1st, preluding 2017 NCPA International Theatre Festival.
It is a love story happening in the Republic of China (1912-1949)
With Mr. WU Zuguang as its playwright, Returning Home on a Snowy Night is the first modern repertoire produced by NCPA. Written in 1942, the drama was premiered in 1944, which received a great response. In the past seven decades, many artists have been unremittingly exploring its artistic charm in various forms, such as in film, drama, opera and ballet. The famous drama director REN Ming said, “Thanks to Mr. WU Zuguang, every character, from bureaucrat, actor, concubine, to small potato from the underclass, is vividly depicted with strong vitality”. In 2012, REN Ming directed Returning Home on a Snowy Night which was presented at NPCA, as well as in Taiwan in October 2014. REN Ming once summarised the rehearsal process as “an endless change”, that “the reason why it becomes a classic is because the work allows a rich space for us to explore its possibility. I often call myself a ‘revisionist’, as I am motivated to constantly ‘revise’ the work. Every rehearsal gives rise to new inspirations, in terms of line performance, character presentation, and essence of the work”.
