King Lear is the third Shakespeare's drama NCPA and LI Liuyi Theatre Studio co-produced after
A Midsummer Night’s Dream and
Hamlet. “A re-understanding of Shakespeare is one of the highlights in this version of
King Lear. We need to step from history into the contemporary era, to make the audience feel as if they would be walking into the present time from four hundred years ago,” said LI Liuyi. German set designer Michael Simon and winner of the Academy Award for Best Costume Design Emi Wada have also joined in. They depict the imperial wilderness and group figures vividly, impressing the audience deeply with a visual presentation of an aesthetic interest: "I do like the oriental richness and elegance of the costumes, which bring to light some gorgeous colour among malicious powers."
In the upcoming third round of performance, PU Cunxin will act out the dispute between the father and daughters in King Lear with YANG Qi, LU Fang and WAN Qianhui. In the drama, Director LI Liuyi highlights the contention for power in the Gloucester Family along two storylines, as well as the conspiracy and loyalty vividly coexisting between the father and sons and between the brothers. To play the father and two sons of the Gloucester Family are French-Chinese artist WEI Xiaoping, Beijing People’s Art Theatre artist JING Hao, and NCPA Drama Ensemble member ZHAO Ling.
Drama King Lear will be staged on January 26th until February 2nd (excluding January 28th), to offer the audience seven authentic feasts of Shakespeare’s play on the arrival of the Spring Festival.
