NCPA Roam about the Classics 2019 to kick off with romance

“Roam about the Classics” is a performance series established by the NCPA in 2009. From July 11th to 21st, Roam about the Classics 2019 will invite world-renowned recitalists, such as CHEN Sa and WU Man, as well as famous Chinese and foreign artistic troupes, including the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, Gershwin Piano Quartet and King’s Singers. This year’s “Roam about the Classics” themes “Music for Love”. Musicians will offer seven fascinating concerts with romantic and touching melodies.

This year’s “Roam about the Classics” will be kicked off by the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, with French conductor Nicholas Chalvin to join hands with the pianist CHEN Sa to perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor and Faure Pelleas et Melisande on July 11th.

Pipa Virtuoso WU Man

As resident artist of China NCPA Orchestra in the 2019/20 season, the internationally acclaimed pipa virtuoso WU Man is not only a messenger for Chinese music and spokesperson for pipa music in the international music scene, but also an iconic figure of crossover music and cross-cultural communications. This time, she will work with instrumentalists of different styles, including the ukulele performer Daniel Ho, who has won Grammy Awards for six times, the Hollywood percussionist Randy Drake and bass guitarist Brandon Wong, who performed bass in the musical The Lion King, to improvise melodious folk music from 11 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. They will cross the divide among nations and music genres to make an amazing spark of music to lead audience into the rainbow world of global folk music.

Beijing Symphony Orchestra

In addition, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra will continue to present something brilliant by performing classic pieces such as Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations.

Gershwin Piano Quartet

The Gershwin Piano Quartet, which has amazed audiences on the NCPA stage for many times, will perform piano adaptations of some classics under the theme, “Fantasy of Love”. They will creatively adapt the “melody of love” by classical musicians such as Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Schubert and Brahms, and also show their passion for music as pioneers by performing modern composers’ jazz works.

King’s Singers

The King’s Singers, which is also popular with audiences, will give a concert of “Trans-century Love” to create audience a thick-fleshed and colourful sound field where they can feel the primitive charms of the human voice. The pieces to be performed are divided into three parts: Love in the Movies, Remembered Love and Love songs The Beatles. In the repertoire are the popular classics composed during the Renaissance to the “Beatles’” time, the Chinese folk songs such as Jasmine Flower, and pop songs by the idol group “BTS”.

From July 20th to 21st, the China NCPA Orchestra will give two poetic and fantastic concerts to round off this year’s “Roam about the Classics”. “A Love Letter from Shakespeare”, the orchestra will perform the Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture, etc. and cellist Johannes Moser will appear to perform Elgar’s Violin Cello Concerto in E Minor. At “Romantic as Is, the violinist HE Ziyu will start with Carmen’s fervent and tragic love story to bring out Shakespeare’s classic love tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
