On the afternoon of April 3rd, the NCPA Youth Arts Festival 2023, co-organised by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and the NCPA, raised the curtain. Nearly 700 representatives of primary and secondary school students from different districts of Beijing delivered performances on the NCPA stage. A total of 1,800 students, teachers and parents watched them.
Before the performance, four art educational activities were arranged for more than 450 students from the Beijing suburbs. The students also explored the NCPA by visiting exhibitions, watching performances and attending public rehearsals at the East and West Exhibition Halls, NCPA café, public spaces and theatres. The renowned dancer LIU Yan and violinist CHEN Xi were invited to deliver special art classes to the students.

The opening ceremony began with
Ode to the Red Flag and the first movement of Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major “Classical”

Whereafter, the Dance Troupe of Yongtai Primary School, Haidian District presented the dance work
Dream under the Starlight. This was the first time for students from Yongtai Primary School and other 39 schools to perform at the NCPA. The NCPA hopes to give full play to its resources and provide a wide stage for more schools and students to showcase their art performances.

This year’s Youth Arts Festival also features a distinctive section on Chinese cultural heritages. With various performances and educational activities of the Peking Opera, folk music and other art forms, the festival is expected to give students a deeper understanding of the value and significance of national culture inheritance.

At the conclusion, chorus master WU Lingfen led the choruses from nine local primary and secondary schools, and students from Beijing School for the Blind and Special Education College of Beijing Union University, performed choral classics Let Us Sway Twin Oars and Songs and Smiles.

In the coming months, more artists will be invited to schools to interact with students face to face. Renowned conductor LÜ Jia and LIU Sha, chorus master WU Lingfen, and Peking Opera artist HU Wenge are invited as the artistic advisors, together with many artists from the China NCPA Orchestra & Chorus, NCPA Resident Opera Singers and NCPA Drama Ensemble, will deliver more than 40 art educational activities for all the participated teachers and students.
