Gaul, 50 BCE, during the Roman occupation. The priest Oroveso leads the Druids in a prayer for revenge against the conquering Romans. After they have left, the Roman proconsul Pollione admits to his friend Flavio that he no longer loves the high priestess Norma, Oroveso's daughter, with whom he has two children. He has fallen in love with a young novice priestess, Adalgisa, who returns his love. Adalgisa confesses to Norma that she has a lover whose name is Pollione. Norma's kindness turns to fury. She tells Adalgisa about her own betrayal by the Roman soldier. Pollione confesses his love for Adalgisa and asks her again to come away with him, but she refuses and vows she would rather die than steal him from Norma.

Norma tries to bring herself to murder her children in their sleep to protect them from living disgracefully without a father. She changes her mind and summons Adalgisa, advising her to marry Pollione and take the children to Rome, while Adalgisa refuses.

Norma is stunned to hear from Clotilde that Adalgisa's pleas have not persuaded Pollione, and in a rage she urges her people to attack the conquerors. Oroveso demands a sacrificial victim, and just then Pollione is brought in, having profaned the sanctuary. Alone with him, Norma promises him his freedom if he will leave Adalgisa and return to her. When he refuses, Norma threatens to kill him and their children, and to punish Adalgisa. She calls in the Druids and tells them that a guilty priestess must die, then confesses that she is referring to herself. Moved by her nobility, Pollione asks to share her fate. Norma begs Oroveso to watch over her children, then leads her lover to the pyre.

In the Chunqiu Period, the younger brother of Lord Zheng rebels in Jingyi. Lord Zheng leads his army to repress them and completely succeeds, but he discovers by chance that his mother has been stealthily supporting his younger brother and intends to dethrone him in favor of the younger. In great rage, Lord Zheng exiles his mother whose surname is JIANG and swears not to meet with her untilboth of them die. However, their terrible relationship would be criticized and harmful to the country. Considering this situation, a senior official named Yingkaoshu tries all means to persuade Lord Zheng to change his mind. He even digs a nine-feetditch to symbolize the Huangquan (netherworld in Chinese) and eventually convincesLord Zheng to meet with his mother there and forget their strife. This conveys the message, "All the people in the country will actively follow the ruler if he rules with benevolence and filial piety".

Iago, a Venetian soldier and ensign, passed over for promotion by Otello, a Moorish nobleman who has returned with a triumph from a battle, has determined to destroy Otello's happiness. He irritates Cassio, whom Otello promoted ahead of Iago, to be drunk while on duty, thereby prompting Otello to dismiss the dishonored Cassio from his service and make Iago his lieutenant.

Then Iago goads Otello into believing that his wife Desdemona is Cassio's lover. Otello soon becomes obsessively jealous and willing to believe anything he is told about his innocent wife. Iago's final 'proof' of Desdemona's infidelity revolves around the loss of a special handkerchief Otello has given her during their courtship. Iago tricks his wife Emilia into stealing the handkerchief, and then convinces Otello that Desdemona has given it to Cassio as a love token. When Desdemona cannot produce the handkerchief, Otello is certain she has been unfaithful and swears an oath of vengeance on his wife and Cassio. Otello smothers her with a pillow. A horrified Emilia enters, and Othello justifies himself, citing the handkerchief as the proof. Recognizing the handkerchief as the one she has stolen for her husband, she is stunned and reveals Iago's guilt. Otello then draws a concealed weapon, stabs himself, and kisses Desdemona as he dies.

Figaro, a servant of the Count Almaviva and Susanna, a maid of the Countess Rosina are to get married. When Figaro is happily preparing for their wedding, Susanna tells him that the Count has an evil intent in giving them the new wedding room.

It seems he has been making advances toward her and plans on exercising his 'droit du seigneur', the purported feudal right of a lord to bed a servant girl on her wedding night before her husband can sleep with her. The Count had the right abolished when he married Rosina, but he now wants to reinstate it. A light breaks in upon Figaro after he knows this, and they plan to expose his scheming. Marcellina, the old housekeeper has all the way been longing to marry Figaro since Figaro once promised to marry her if he should default on a loan she had made to him, and she intends to enforce that promise.

This idea is proposed by Dr. Bartolo who is seeking revenge against Figaro for thwarting his plans to marry Rosina himself ten years ago. Cherubino, a young beau in the residence of the Count, flirts with all the women he meets, describing his emerging infatuation with them all day long; Basilio, the slimy music teacher, gossips anywhere and anytime; besides, there are also a muddle-headed judge, a drunken gardener, and of course the Countess Rosina who is always alone at night. All kinds of roles appear one after another, and the match between the noble and the mass begins. At last, the lower class who is cleverer and braver triumph and manage to embarrass the Count in the presence of all.

Turandot depicts a love story of mystery. Turandot, though she is a most beautiful Chinese Princess, is coldhearted, and she stipulates that any prince seeking to marry her must answer three riddles - and if he fails, he will be sentenced to death. Calaf, the prince of Tartary who is in exile in China, determines to win her as his bride and answers all the questions correctly.

However, Princess Turandot refuses to accept defeat. Calaf offers Turandot a riddle of his own: if she can learn his name by dawn, he will forfeit his life. Princess Turandot captures the father of the prince and his maid Liù and extorts a confession from them by torture. Liù kills herself to keep the secret, which gives coldhearted Turandot a great shock. At dawn, Turandot still has no idea of the prince's name. Calaf makes Turandot forced to kiss him and finally tells her his real name. Yet Princess Turandot does not announce the prince's real name, on the contrary, she announces that she will marry the prince and his name is Love.
