The drama February is adapted from a novel of the same name authored by modern Chinese writer ROU Shi. With the background of the 1920s, this drama focuses on what happens to young intellectuals, such as XIAO Jianqiu, TAO Lan, as well as other such as the widow Wensao whose husband dies in the Northern Expedition (1926-1927). February is a true portrayal of the social reality on the eve of the great revolution and intellectuals’ reflections over the times they have lived in. The characters are vivid, the language is of poetic, and the script is terse and forceful. Prior to this drama, the film Early Spring in February (directed by XIE Tieli), based on the same novel, has become a classical masterpiece in the history of Chinese film.
The NCPA selects this theme in order to introduce China’s modern history and literary classics through the stage and to demonstrate the efforts to carry forward classical “Chinese culture”. LI Liuyi (influential drama director and playwright in contemporary China), music director CHEN Qigang, composer WANG Zhiyi, well-known domestic set designer GONG Xun, costume and style designer MEN Xiaoguang, lighting designer DENG Wen and other artists are invited to join the creation team. Sophisticated drama performers, who shine on the stage for a long time, also contribute to this drama, together with outstanding performers of the NCPA Drama Ensemble. They will jointly present this drama brimming with unique characteristics of the times.
