The opera Andrea Chénier focuses on the protagonist Andrea Chénier under the background of the French Revolution.
The opera begins with Contessa's elaborate ball. At the party, Andrea Chénier, a patriotic poet, recites his verses on the countessa ball to express love for the motherland and opposition to tyranny and oppression of the poor. Contessa's daugther Maddalena is moved and ashamed of her provoking words to Chénier before. Gérard, one of Contessa's footmen, hides his secret love to Maddalena. With his hatred of the aristocracy life, Gérard leaves the ball with his father and the starving peasants.
After the French Revolution breaks out, Maddalena lives a dangerous life. Chénier is also expelled from the Jacobin party because of his articles accusing Robespierre, and Chénier is monitored by an incredible (a Jacobin spy). Maddalena's mulatto companion Bersi, now a merveilleuse, tells Chénier that Maddalena will meet him beside Statue tonight, but the incredible eavesdrops on their talk. When the couple meet, Gérard and the incredible appear. Chénier fights and wounds Gérard.
The incredible gives a suggestion to Gérard: arresting Chénier to trap Maddalena. Gérard's accusation forces Maddalena to come out. She begs Gérard to rescue Chénier. She offers herself to him in exchange for Chénier's freedom. Gérard is touched by her noble love and swears to save Chénier.
The trial starts. When the Fouquier-Tinville reads the accusation against Chénier, Gérard states that his accusation is false. But his words are interrupted by the masses, and Chénier is sentenced to death. Gérard arranges for the couple to meet. Maddalena decides to die together with her lover. She bribes prison guard, and puts on the prison garb of female prisoner sentenced to death. Finally, the lovers to the guillotine ('Vicino a te s'acqueta').
