Vladimir Spivakov, well known to orchestras and audiences alike as one of the leading violinists of our time, equally enjoys a multifaceted career as a respected conductor and committed humanitarian. He is artistic director and principal conductor of the National Philharmonic of Russia and President of the Moscow Performing Arts Centre since 2003. From 1999 to 2002 Spivakov served as principal conductor of the Russian National Orchestra. As a chamber and symphony orchestra conductor, Vladimir Spivakov has appeared in the world’s most important concert venues and has conducted European and American orchestras, including the symphony orchestras of London, Chicago, Budapest, the French Radio Orchestra as well as all the leading Russian orchestras.
Mr. Spivakov made his United States recital debut in 1975 and international engagements quickly followed. As a violinist, he has performed as soloist with the most important orchestras in the world, including those of Moscow, Berlin, Vienna, London, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. He has collaborated with some of the 20th century’s most eminent conductors, including Svetlanov, Kondrashin and Abbado.
Mr. Spivakov became the artistic director of the International Colmar Music Festival in France in 1989, and has been its leader until today. Many prominent musical groups have appeared at the festival during the twenty six years of its existence as well as great world famous artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Yehudi Menuhin, Vladimir Kraynev and Sergey Leiferkus.
For Vladimir Spivakov charity work is a philosophy of life; and for many years he has been involved in humanitarian and charitable activities. Together with the “Moscow Virtuosi” Chamber Orchestra Maestro Spivakov performed in Armenia soon after the horrible earthquake of 1988 and in Ukraine three days after the Chernobyl disaster, and has given hundreds of charity concerts throughout the territory of the former Soviet Union. In 1994 Mr. Spivakov founded the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation, devoted to humanitarian, artistic and educational work. Most specifically, the Foundation’s mission is to improve living standards for orphans and disabled children and to provide creative conditions, through scholarships and grants, to develop young talents. For over 20 years the Foundation has helped thousands of children and launched many young talents.
Mr. Spivakov has won many honors and awards for his great contributions to the world of art and his activities aimed at education, peace and dialogue between cultures.
Born in Oufa, in the Soviet Republic of Bashkiria, Vladimir Spivakov studied violin with Yuri Yankelevich, the famous professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and later with his idol, David Oistrakh, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. While still very young, Vladimir Spivakov was awarded high prizes at several important international contests, such as the Marguerite Long – Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris (1965), the Paganini Competition in Genoa (1967), the Montreal International Competition (1969) and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1970).
Mr. Spivakov has recorded extensively both as soloist and conductor, and his more than forty recordings reflect different musical styles and eras, from the European baroque to the works of 20th century composers including Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Penderecki, Schnittke, P?rt, Kancheli, Shchedrin and Gubaidulina.
Until 1997 Mr. Spivakov played a violin by Francesco Gobetti, which had been a present from Professor Yankelevich. Since 1997 he has been playing a Stradivari.
Biao Li began appearing on the stage as a conductor in 2011. Maestro Christoph Eschenbach and Lawrence Foster have given him great inspiration and support at beginning of his conductor career. In 2012, Beijing Symphony Orchestra named Biao Li the Artist-in-Residence and Principal Guest Conductor, a position established for the first time in the history of this orchestra. In 2014, he was appointed as Music Director and Principal Conductor of China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater Orchestra.
As a conductor, he worked with more than 20 orchestras in Europe and China from 2011, such as Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic Orchestra, Marseille Opera Orchestra, Philharmonie der Nord-Westfalen, Neue-Brandenburg Philharmonie, Orchestra Dell‘Opera Di Parma, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Loh-Orchester Sonders Sondershausen, and many of China’s famous symphony orchestra.
In 2013, Li was invited to conduct Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic Orchestra for the opening concert in the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s music festival. As the first Chinese conductor, he successfully conducted all Verdi works in the whole concert, received Italian media critical acclaim. Then he conducted Orchestra Dell’Opera Di Parma toured five cities in China for New Year Concert. Also, Li will as a guest conductor for this orchestra in 2015 season. April 2014, Li Biao worked together with Central Conservatory of Music School Opera center, completed the Opera production of Aida in Beijing Ploy Theater with a great success.
From May to June of 2014, Li Biao percussion group made debut tour to South America. The group has performed three weeks throughout the most prestige’s venue in South America such as, Teatro Solis (Montevideo, Uruguay), Teatro Municipal De Santiago (Santiago, Chile), Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (Rio, Brazil), Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Sociedade de Cultura Artística (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo (Bogota, Columbia). The tour was a huge success and at the end of end of tour, the presenters have invited the group back for a 2016 tour. Due to the successful debut in South America, Li Biao percussion group has also received the invitation to tour Mexico in 2015. Li Biao percussion group will continue tour in China in July 2014. At the end of 2014, Biao Li will also perform as soloist with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
Apart from many engagements with percussion soloist and ensemble, Biao Li also has many conducting concert in the next season. He will conduct the Macao Orchestra in 2nd half of 2014 and continue to conduct European orchestras. His first debut as conductor in South America are also in planning, with orchestra such as Brasileira Sinfonica Orquestra and Argentina symphony orchestras.
Beside all the overseas conducting projects, Biao Li as music director will continue work with his own orchestra to present a variety of program at new concert season in the prestige venue of Beijing, such as NCPA and Forbidden City concert hall.
One of the most promising talents of his homeland, Alexander Malofeyev was born in Moscow in 2001. He is a student at the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow (piano class of Elena Beryozkina).
By the age of twelve the pianist had already performed at major concert venues including the Great, Small and Rachmaninoff Halls of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre, the Moscow International House of Music, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Hall of Columns of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, the Kaufman Music Center in New York and UNESCO headquarters in Paris. He has given concerts in Russia, Azerbaijan, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Spain and the USA.
As a soloist Alexander Malofeev has appeared with the Mariinsky Orchestra (under Valery Gergiev), the Russian National Orchestra (under Dmitry Liss), the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra (under Yuri Tkachenko), the Gubernatorial Symphony Orchestra of the Irkutsk Philharmonic (under Ilmar Lapinsch), the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre Symphony Orchestra (under Alexander Solovyov), the Symphony Orchestra of the Astana State Philharmonic (under YerzhanDautov), the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine (under Igor Palkin, the Azerbaijan State UzeyirHajibeyov Symphonic Orchestra (under HetagTedeyev) and the Gubernatorial Kostroma Symphony Orchestra (under Paul Gerstein). In July 2014 Alexander Malofeyev won 1st prize and the Gold Medal at the VIII International Tchaikovsky Youth Competition in Moscow.
The pianist has also been a prize-winner at numerous other international competitions and festivals, among them the IX International Rachmaninoff Young Pianists’ Competition (Novgorod; Grand Prix and Special Award for the best performance of works by Bach, 2014), the Musical Diamond international competition (Moscow; Grand Prix, 2011 and 2014), the All-Russian competition Young Talents of Russia (2013), the I International Young Pianists’ Competition Astana Piano Passion (1st prize, 2013), the Stairway to the Stars international festival and competition in Moscow (Gran Prix, 2013), the Moscow Stars arts festival (2013), the XI Youth Delphic Games of Russia (Gold Medal, 2012), the ArtobolevskayaLittle Pianist festival (Grand Prix, 2012), the Mozart-Wunderkind international competition (Austria, Grand Prix, 2011), the international Internet Music Competition (Serbia, 1st prize, 2011) and the Х Moscow young pianists’ competition Steps to Mastery(2011).Malofeev has, moreover, won the IV New Names of Moscow children’s arts festival (2011) and been awarded the Public Recognition Award (Moscow, 1st prize, 2012).
The National Philharmonic of Russia (NPR) was founded in January 2003 by the Ministry of Culture as commissioned by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The Orchestra united top orchestra musicians and gifted youth. During the twelve years of its activities, the NPR has succeeded in becoming one of the best symphonic orchestras of Russia and in gaining admiration from the audience and recognition from the professionals.
The most important objective of the NPR is continuation of the legacy and traditions of three great Russian conductors: Evgeny Mravinsky, Kirill Kondrashin and Evgeny Svetlanov. The Orchestra aspires to preserve the most valuable of their heritage, while forming its own style which combines great traditions and new technologies.
The Orchestra is headed by Maestro Vladimir Spivakov, a world-known violinist and conductor. Prominent conductors are collaborating and regularly performing with the NPR. Along with Vladimir Spivakov, the National Philharmonic of Russia has been collaborating with such sought-after maestros as James Conlon, Ken-David Masur, Krzysztof Penderecki, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Otto Tausk, Simon Gaudenz, Alexander Vedernikov, Tugan Sokhiev, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Jan Latham-Koenig, John Nelson, Michel Plasson, Okko Kamu and others.
During past years the NPR has performed with many outstanding artists, such as opera stars Jessye Norman, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Kiri Te Kanawa, Dmitry Hvorostovsky, Maria Gulegina, Juan Diego Florez, Matthias Goerne, Waltraud Meier, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Marcelo Alvarez, Ramon Vargas, Violeta Urmana, Anna Netrebko, violinists Gidon Kremer, Gil Shaham, Hilary Hahn, Laurent Korcia, cellists Natalia Gutman, Alexander Knyazev, Tatiana Vasilieva, pianists Arkady Volodos, Barry Douglas, Boris Berezovsky, Kun Woo-Paik, Marc-Andre Hamelin. Among many artists who have worked with the NPR on a regular basis are John Lill, Denis Matsuev, Nikoly Lugansky, Vadim Gluzman, Hibla Gerzmava, Albina Shagimuratova, Anna Aglatova, Vasily Ladyuk, Dmitry Korchak, Nikolay Tokarev, Alexander Romanovsky, Sergey Dogadin.
Another important objective of the Orchestra is supporting young gifted musicians and providing appropriate conditions for their professional and artistic growth. During the 2004/2005 season the Orchestra formed a group of apprentices-conductors. The brightest of them have been given the opportunity to make a debut in the NPR’s concerts at the Moscow House of Music and the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
The NPR’s repertoire covers the period from early classical symphonies to the newest works of modern composers. In the course of eleven years the Orchestra has presented many exceptional projects, world premieres, unique transcription series and concert cycles.
In accordance with its status and name, the National Philharmonic of Russia gives concerts not only in Moscow, but in various regions of Russia as well. The NPR ends up each season with a tour in Russia.
Every year the NPR takes part in the International Music Festival in Colmar, France. The Orchestra has toured extensively over the CIS countries and the Baltic countries, in Europe, the USA, and Japan.
In May 2005 the Capriccio Recording Company released CD and DVD of Isaak Schwartz’s Concert for Orchestra, titled “Yellow Stars”, recorded by the NPR under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov to whom the composer dedicated the work. In 2010-2014 Sony Classical released several NPR’s CD’s with music of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Grieg.
