YU Hongmei Erhu Artist
YU Hongmei is an outstanding contemporary erhu player and educator in China. She is currently Vice President, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of the Central Conservatory of Music. She is also Vice Chairperson of Erhu Branch of the Chinese Musicians Association, Vice Chairperson of Huqin Professional Committee of China Nationalities Orchestra Society, Guest Soloist of China National Traditional Orchestra, Visiting Professor of Bard College and Visiting Professor of University of Calgary. As one of the most powerful and influential erhu players and educators in the contemporary era, YU Hongmei was conferred with “Pro Musicis International Award” in New York. Erhu Concerto Album of YU Hongmei won the 4th China Golden Record Award. The album Mihu won “Best World National Music Award” in Indie Awards (World-class Independent Record Awards in the United States). She was the first Chinese musician laureled with this honour since establishment of this world-renowned music award more than 40 years ago. Additionally, her solo album Red Plum Caprice won First Prize of the 1st National Award for Excellent Art and Audiovisual Products. In February 2002, she successfully held a recital in the world’s most famous Carnegie Hall in New York, and became the first Chinese national instrumentalist to hold a solo concert there. She won First Prize of the 10th “Outstanding Young Teacher Award” conferred by Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation. She is covered by “New Century Talent Funding Programme” of the Ministry of Education. She also won a Gardener Award in “Wenhua Cup” Chinese National Instrumental Music Competition under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. Covered and supported by Beijing Top-notch Cultural Talent Training Project launched by Publicity Department of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, she established “YU Hongmei Master Studio of Chinese Bowstring Music”. In 2018, she took the lead in the founding of the First Batch of Chinese Outstanding Traditional Culture Inheritance Bases (Chinese National Music) under the Ministry of Education. Erhu solo Plum Blossom in Ink, composed in 2019, was selected as a project funded by China National Arts Foundation. She was selected into the “National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, and was awarded with an honorary title of “Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”. Moreover, she is Cultural Master and Talent included in “Four Kinds of Talents in the First Batch” designated by Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.
As one of the most important contemporary erhu players in China, YU Hongmei is a frequenter to many countries and regions across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. Until now, she has successfully held more than 100 recitals all over the world. She repeatedly appears on world-famous music stages and has contributed to many major performances both at home and abroad. She was invited to give lectures in many music and art colleges, such as California College of the Arts and City University of Hong Kong. She premiered many classical erhu works with representative significances of the times, including Pursuing Dream in Beijing, Baque, Heavenly Fragrance, Charms of Xikou, North of the Great Wall on the Strings, Amanesa, Poems in Eulogy of the Soul of China and Plum Blossom in Ink. 16 solo performance albums of her have been recorded and published so far. She was invited by CCTV to record Erhu Teaching by Famous Masters, YU Hongmei Erhu Solo Concert and the music video film Blooming Red Plum—Erhu Playing Album of YU Hongmei. She edited and published A Collection of Erhu Concert Works (three volumes in total). She authors academic articles, such as The Dynamic Changes in Erhu Playing and Playing Method of A Flower. She is Editor-in-chief of Memorial Collection for ZHANG Shao (published by the Central Conservatory of Music Press). She also served as Chief Expert of “Inheritance and Development of Instrumental Music Categories in the New China”, a major project supported by the National Social Science Fund (Group of Art Theory) for Year of 2019.
The disciples of YU Hongmei have won the “Golden Bell Award” of Chinese Music, “Wenhua Award” of the Ministry of Culture, National Instrumental Music Television Competition on CCTV and other major competitions at home and abroad. Initiated by her, Shengfeng National Chamber Orchestra won Grand Champion of National Instrumental Music Television Competition on CCTV in 2012, National Chamber Music Gold Award in the 9th “Golden Bell Award” of Chinese Music in 2013, and highest award for national instrumental music education, teaching and highlights performance hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2017. Founded by her, Artistic Exaltation Chamber Orchestra obtained the championship in China Instrumental TV Competition (Group of Traditional Ensemble) under the auspices of China Media Group in 2019. New York Concert Review once commented that “Her wonderful performance is riveting”, and “She is really an outstanding player who sheds light on the spirit of contemporary Chinese music culture”.
