YUAN Chenye is a famous baritone. In 1994, he won the Gold Award for Best Vocalist in the Tenth International Tchaikovsky Competition, which is known as the “Olympic Games in the Music Scene”, becoming the first and only Chinese singer to win this special honour. In 2015 and 2023, he returned to Moscow and St. Petersburg at the invitation of the famous conductor Gergiev, Chairman of the Jury Committee, joined the jury of the 15th and 17th competitions as the only Asian vocal judge, and presented the gold award to the winner. He has won grand awards in many other international vocal competitions, including the First Place for Best Male Singer in the Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition, Finland, the Highest Prize in the Opera Competition by the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the First Place and Audience Award in the Singing Competition by the Houston Grand Opera, etc.
Over the past 25 years, YUAN Chenye has been active on the international opera stage and concert stage – he has starred in 40 operas at the leading opera houses in U.S. cities including San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Washington, Boston, Pittsburgh, Denver, North Carolina, Sacramento, Palm Beach, St. Louis, Santa Fe, San Diego, and Omaha, Canadian cities Toronto and Vancouver, Wales, UK, Auckland, New Zealand, and elsewhere. He has also held concerts with world-class orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, and Bamberger Symphoniker. YUAN Chenye has given solo concerts in the United States, Finland, Singapore and other countries, as well as Chinese cities including Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong. He has worked with conductors including Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Charles Mackerras, Charles Dutoit, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, Antonio Pappano, Patrick Summers, Eugene Kohn, Massimo Zanetti, Kristjan Jarvi, Marin Alsop, etc.
YUAN Chenye has starred in 11 operas at the NCPA, including Rigoletto, Nabucco, and Yevgény Onégin (as a title role player), as well as The Orphan of ZHAO and A Village Teacher (world premiere). He featured in the opera Song of Farewell (world premiere) and the new version of The Wilderness at the Beijing Music Festival. In September 2017, he performed the world premiere of Polish composer Penderecki’s Symphony No. 6 in cooperation with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. The title of this piece was printed on the score published by Schott Music.

In addition to being active on the international stage, YUAN Chenye is also well known to the Chinese audience. As a soloist, he has given performances in lots of important events and national diplomatic activities including the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, Spring Festival Song and Dance Gala, the New Year’s Concert, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Spring Festival Gala, the Opening Ceremony of the Xinghai Music Festival, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Chinese Culture Year of Russia, etc.
YUAN Chenye is a graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Johns Hopkins University, and the Opera Center of Houston Grand Opera. Now he is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Vocal & Opera Department, Central Conservatory of Music. He has served as a judge seven times for the China “Golden Bell Award”, China’s most authoritative music competition, and a judge for the CCTV Young Singers’ Grand Prix, China “Gold Record Award”, and International Music Competition Harbin. YUAN Chenye is a member of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a member of the Eighth Committee of All-China Federation of Youth, and a member of the Central Committee of China Democratic League.
