On the evening of June 19th, NCPA drama commission LIN Zexu was revived for a fifth time. The leading artists, including PU Cunxin, XU Fan, HONG Tao, GUO Da and GUAN Dongtian, all returned to the stage, where the national hero LIN Zexu’s life, full of ups and downs, was acted out.
In 2019, the NCPA worked with the Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Centre produced and launched LIN Zexu in order to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. Since premiere, the drama has been staged for 30 times in four rounds.
It has also toured Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Nanjing and Suzhou, with all tickets sold out soon. This time, under the direction of WANG Xiaodi, the creative team and performers had spent many days rehearsing in a bid to present a higher-quality cultural work.
Performing artist PU Cunxin portrayed LIN Zexu vividly on stage with his superb acting skills. Meanwhile, veteran actor HONG Tao played Emperor Daoguang, who wears a proud, self-satisfied look.
In addition to depicting how LIN Zexu spent most of his life, the drama reveals the monarch-subject relationship between Emperor Daoguang and him, the conjugal relation between his wife ZHENG Shuqing and him, the teacher-student relationship between the loyal minister WANG Ding and him, and the conflict between his foe QI Shan and him.
The actress XU Fan played ZHENG Shuqing. The wife’s endless love for her husband was rendered to life in each of her movements and eye expressions. Further, the audience was deeply touched by her performance of Konghou Yin, a song that ZHENG Shuqing sang while bidding farewell to her husband.
These leading artists, together with other performers, acted out the turbulent period of history full of changes by portraying several important characters on stage.
The performance will continue on until June 27th. June 26th is International Day against Drug Abuse, and the drama is expected to warn the world to reinforce its line of defence just as LIN Zexu has done in history.
