On the evening of September 8th, the NCPA Opera Commission A Village Teacher in new version was staged. Through its simple but touching plot, tear-jerking melodies and grand theme about love and responsibility, the opera brought a soul-stirring artistic feast to the audience.
ZHOU Xiaolin, who had given an outstanding performance in A Village Teacher, played again the heroine YANG Caihong. With her mellow, neat voice and captivating performance, she portrayed the kind-hearted teacher who dedicates her life to the cause of education in the most moving way.
The honest and hardworking village chief ZHOU Luoping was played by baritone WANG Hexiang. As the village chief and a disabled veteran, ZHOU Luoping is upright and reliable.
Tenor KOU Jing played the selfish LI Wenguang, the “ungrateful lover” of YANG Caihong, with a fierce, high-spirited musical character. In the arias such as “I Want to Fly”, the tenor’s firm and penetrating voice distinctly portrayed LI Wenguang’s desire for leaving.
MENG Qiuxia, another teacher in the opera, is a simple and cheerful character. The role was acted by soprano WU He, who impressed the audience with her sweet and innocent portrayal.
LI Wenguang’s mother and Elder Shan were played by mezzo-soprano WANG Lei and bass-baritone GUAN Zhijing respectively. Their portrayal of the characters was accurate and believable. In the final scene where they consoled ZHOU Luoping after YANG Caihong’s death, they gave an earnest and sorrowful performance that brought tears to the eyes of the audience.
The children’s choruses throughout the opera were undoubtedly a highlight. The choruses were performed by the Beijing No. 171 High School Jinfan Choir and the Sevenages Children’s Musical Theatre Company.
Conductor ZHANG Yi’s grasp of the music was precise and meticulous. Under his baton, the NCPA Orchestra perfectly presented the symphonic, theatrical and lyrical nature of the opera with its superb capacity.
The curtain rose as the music began. The geometric shapes of the herringbone classroom and the rectangular blackboard formed an elegant stage composition full of ingenuity. The striking “thunderstorm forecast” on the blackboard was a constant reminder to the audience that tragedy was about to happen. In the opera, scenes are designed to set the mood.
On the evening of September 9th, NCPA opera singers LI Xintong, ZHANG Yang, WANG Chong and ZHANG Wenqin will take the stage to render this ordinary but moving story. This round of A Village Teacher will run until September 12th.
