On the evening of June 9th, The NCPA Theatre reopened. In the melody of Springtime, all performers of NCPA Drama Crossroads appear on the stage, standing at the crossroads of life with an ardent passion and perseverance, meeting the audience again.
In the new round, members of the NCPA Drama Ensemble, including DONG Wenliang, XU Zixuan, LI Zhaoyang, FENG Yang, YU Mengchao, LIU Beibei, and WANG Wenjie, reunited with one another. They met the audience again with what they had acquired from repeated rehearsals during the pandemic.
It is the first time that the drama has been staged at the NCPA Theatre. The expansion of the Theatre becomes a test of technology implementation, but it achieves a much better effect in a visual presentation on the stage.
The other side of the 1930s’ modern Shanghai is mirrored in the experience of Mr. ZHAO, Atang, Big LIU and Xiaoxu, four unemployed young men when difficulties and hopes appear alternately.
All performers go out of their characters and look back at the production staff and main cast of the classic film from the perspective of contemporary youths in the end.
They also look towards the back curtain at the ending of the film with arm in arm and shoulder to shoulder as the young people in the film do, watching them march forward firmly with vigour to a distant location.
HUANG Ying, director of the drama Crossroads, has skillfully turned the stage into an editing bench. A live performance and real-time photographing are intertwined with film images, strengthening the timeless dialogue between two generations of youth.
Springtime, an interlude song in the film, is still used in the drama. Being full of hope and passion, the song brings a sunny spring breeze to the confusing crossroads of life.
