On October 10th, the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra staged the classic ballet Swan Lake at the Opera House, which has brought greater attention to the NCPA Dance Festival 2023, while also kicking off their tour of China.
In 1895, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's version of Swan Lake had its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre. After 128 years of uninterrupted inheritance by generations of artists, the Mariinsky Theatre remains the most authoritative, standard and rigorous interpreter of this work.
The curtain raising and the night falling, there came the sound of swan-themed music, accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra under Arseny Shuprlyakov’s baton.
The prince arrived at the quiet swan lake, where a herd of swans - ingeniously designed stage props - were swimming slowly on the water, with their elegant postures reflecting on the water. The distinctive stage design amazed the audience.
Prince Siegfried, danced by Nikita Korneyev, won warm applause for his skillful movements - whirling and jumping steadily with strength; he showed his princely elegance.
Odette, played by Principal Dancer Oxana Skorik, waved her arms gracefully to pour forth her miserable sufferings, with her perseverance and bravery reflected by the dancer’s clear and steady toe movements.
In Act II, dancers from the Mariinsky Theatre gave a brilliant performance of the passionate Spanish dance, graceful Neapolitan dance, elegant Hungarian dance, and lively Mazurka.
The enchanting and evil glamourous black swan, Odile, danced by Oxana Skorik, enchanted the prince with her flamboyant beauty and the exciting fouettés, which also captivated the audience.
The ballet will be staged at the NCPA until October 12th. The Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra will stage Don Quixote at the NCPA Taihu Art Centre, Tongzhou District, Beijing on the 14th and 15th. Two Mariinsky Orchestra concerts led by maestro Valery Gergiev on the 23rd and 24th at the NCPA Concert Hall are also scheduled.
