On the night of January 25th, Gounod’s opera Roméo et Juliette was staged at the NCPA Opera House. Under the baton of XU Zhong, the NCPA Resident Singers, China NCPA Chorus and Orchestra offered a stunning French opera feast to the audience with top international artists.
2024 is the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, which also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. This full-length opera was put on as the first of 2024 to unveil the celebrations for the anniversary. It was also the first large-scale event to be carried out in Beijing in the France-China Year of Culture and Tourism.
The time and place that the story takes place are intentionally fuzzed up by the director Stefano Poda, who has created classic scenes from a modern perspective. As the curtain raised slowly, a concise and pure-white stage came into the view, with huge curved lines filling the whole space.
Such installation art symbolised the relationship between the two families, Capulet and Montague, which are hostile to each other, but dependent on each other.
Influential singers from many countries, including Ani Yorentz, Thomas Bettinger, MEI Jie, Nicolas Testè, Alexandre Duhamel, and Paola Gardina, featured in the performance.
Under the baton of Chinese conductor XU Zhong, China NCPA Orchestra and gave a professional accompaniment with ease. Meanwhile, the Beijing Dance Drama & Opera gave a wonderful dance performance.
The performance will continue till the 28th. Chinese singers Meigui Zhang (as Juliette) and WANG Chuan (as Roméo) will join hands with outstanding opera singers, including MEI Jie, ZHANG Wenwei, ZHANG Yang, ZHANG Yajie, HU Yue, YUAN Lu, WANG Jing, YAN Sinan, WANG Meng, ZHAO Denghui, LIANG Yufeng, and ZHANG Yue, to offer one more gluttonous feast to the audience.
