On the night of April 27th, the NCPA drama commission DENG Shichang had its premiere. The leading performers, starring WANG Lei, ZHANG Yechuan, GUAN Dongtian, LI Xiaomeng, SHE Nannan and the NCPA Drama Ensemble members.
Under the guidance of creative team, including the director WANG Xiaodi, playwright LI Baoqun, set designer JI Qiao, lighting designer XING Xin, costume and hair style designer LI Ruiding, video projection designer HU Tianji and composer YU Li, the audience drew closer to the inner world of DENG Shichang and other historical figures.
DENG Shichang, played by WANG Lei, stood in waves in the deep sea, looking at the mottled battleship Zhiyuan Ship, catching the sight of his young self, an ambitious young man determined to ride the wind and waves to make his dream come true.
As a minister of Beiyang, LI Hongzhang, acted by ZHANG Yechuan (right), chose to bear the misery and ordered the Beiyang Fleet to protect the battleships to subdue the enemy.
DING Ruchang, an admiral at the Beiyang Fleet, portrayed by GUAN Dongtian (second from right), though fearless and high-hearted, also had to be subjected to petty annoyances from the imperial court.
Together with the members of the NCPA Drama Ensemble, the five leading performers are brightening the stage and impressing the audience with the glorious image of DENG Shichang. DENG Shichang’s aspiration to serve the country, patriotic sentiment and valor in fighting the enemy were visualised as something praiseworthy.
