If you step into the Opera House of the Beijing Performing Arts Centre these days, you will find a territory of “cats”. Audiences have been attracted to the cat-shaped standing signs and the display boards put up for the musical Cats, as well as an assortment of cultural and creative products.
For six days from November 19th, the West End Theatre musical commission "Cats" will be performed eight times at the Beijing Performing Arts Centre as another blockbuster in the repertoire for the 2024 NCPA International Theatre Festival.
For many musical fans, “Cats” is a timeless classic. It has become a worldwide sensation since its premiere at the West End Theatre in 1981. Many audiences have been introduced to the world of musicals because of “Cats”. This time, the audience will enjoy the eternal charm of “Cats” in its authentic stage presentation.
The talented artists will vividly interpret the unique personality and inner feeling of every cat, including the brave Hero Cat, proud Railway Cat, astute Klepto Cat, handsome Magic Cat, rebellious Rock Cat, etc. The classic melody, Memory, still sounds deeply touching in the Charm Cat’s heartfelt voice. The passionate tap dance, elegant ballet, dynamic jazz dance and superb dancing skills are also fantastic.
The stage amazingly creates a “playground” for cats. The oversized bin, abandoned car, giant tyre, dentifrice tube, coke can and thousands of other stage props, are all enlarged in proportion to the cat’s perspective, recreating the world as seen through a cat’s eyes. More than 250 sets of gorgeous costumes and over 30 heads of all-handmade beautiful “cat” hair are presented. At halftime, the “cats” appear in the auditorium, surprising the audience pleasantly with an overwhelming immersive experience.
The musical “Cats” is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece, adapted from the Noble Prize Winner in Literature T.S. Eliot’s “Book of Practical Cats”. Despite the absence of a complicated plot, an interesting colourful world is built around the Midnight Carnival featuring “Jellicle Cats” to highlight the theme - love and mercy. As the best musical in history, it has not only won worldwide acclaim, but has also set box office records several times. Further, the musical has won seven Tony Awards for its unique plot, rich music and dance and well-received characterization.
