The story begins as Effendi hears that people are leading a hard life in the fantastic and beautiful Sun City. He gets there, only to find that there is a bad guy posing as him.
Facing heavy taxes imposed by the king, the people look woebegone, and Effendi's Double is taking the opportunity to cheat the poor. With his wisdom, Effendi exposes His Double’s crimes and makes the king aware of the necessity to treat the people well.
The librettist, DONG Ni, sets the plot from children’s perspective. The “bad guys” - His Double and Bad Donkey - goof up in a funny way. Effendi outsmarts His Double, convincing the kids that one should uphold justice and keep kind.
The stage director, MAO Ernan, uses tender feelings and varied body movements to achieve a fuller dramatic effect so that the kids believe “Effendi does exist”.
Regular cast including JIN Zhengjian, GUAN Zhijing, WANG Hexiang, MEI Jie, LI Junxian, LIANG Yufeng, CHEN Yingzhu, HU Yue, FAN Rong and XU Chao, successfully acted in the performance again. Young artists, including LIU Naiqi, ZHENG Ruzhi, MA Guoyi and JIN Fuyiqing, joined the cast for the first time.
Under the baton of JIN Gang, a conductor from China National Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra rendered joyful symphonic music with Central Asian characteristics on their musical instruments including the rawap and hand drum.
After the performances at the BPAC, the opera will be staged for eight sessions at the NCPA Theatre. The troupers, including WANG Hongwei and WANG Ziyin, will share the stage with other outstanding artists to restage the legend of Effendi.
