The drama began with a snowy night, on which an old man staggered into the backyard of a large mansion. A moment later, there came louder and louder sounds of gongs and drums amidst cheers, clamours from behind the scenes, breaths of life from the folk world, and a glimpse of the SU Mansion, looking so desolate in snow… Pictures in 1942 unfolded slowly on stage.

The drama depicts a tragic love between WEI Liansheng, a famous Peking Opera artist, and Mr. SU’s fourth concubine, Yuchun. They meet by Peking opera and fall in love with each other. They are determined to elope, only to fail.

With years of Peking opera performance, YU Shaoqun, who was praised by the audience as “WEI Liansheng Himself” in the past rounds, once again became the first highlight on the stage in his female martial role.

Chief Justice SU Hongji, portrayed by ZHANG Qiuge (right), is the master of the SU Mansion. He enjoys great power in the officialdom, always keeping serious in speech and manner before his colleagues, but in the end, he sits alone in the family temple, looking quite lonely and empty-minded.

Yuchun, played by CHENG Lisha, is the incarnation of grace as envisioned by the author. She is clever, brave, coquettish and sober-minded, making her not only tender and soft as water, but also strong-willed.

NCPA Drama Ensemble members, DONG Wenliang (left) and SUN Lishi (2nd from left), acted the roles of WANG Xingui and XU Fucheng, giving a vivid portrayal of the lower-class figures, who often appear around WEI Liansheng.

When there came the ending music, YU Shaoqun, all in red, began to sing and dance on the snowy night with a folding fan in his hand. It is in the vast expanse of whiteness that a legendary opera artist has his life come to an end.

The drama will be staged five times till June 27th (with a break on 23rd) to immerse the audience in this modern classic drama in a poetic and philosophical atmosphere.
